Life and Work with Taylor Hyland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Hyland.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Taylor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be my own boss and call my own shots. I also always LOVED changing up my hair and expressing myself through my appearance (SORRY MOM!). I started working at 15 in the food industry and kept that up for about seven years before I realized I REALLY don’t like working for people, it was time to be my own boss. Thats when I decided I would go to cosmetology school and I absolutely fell in LOVE with making people feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside! I worked a full-time job, went to school full time and got absolutely no sleep but every single moment of it was worth it for where I am today, and I’m just getting started! For about the first two years after school, I continued to keep what I called my “side job” as a shift supervisor at Starbucks, still getting VERY little sleep and intaking WAY more coffee than I probably should have been. I am now proudly a full-time independent stylist at Salon Thrive in Santee (no more side job! still drinking just as much coffee). Lots of hardwork, but worth every second of it!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth roads don’t lead anywhere exciting. There have been NUMEROUS obstacles and challenges that I have faced along the way. Having to support myself by working a full-time job through school and then keeping that second job even after school which brought many months with no days off. It was definitely a lot of sacrifice at any age but especially at 21! To anyone just getting started, ITS SO EXTREMELY WORTH IT!! If you have a heart for what you are doing the possibilities and opportunities are truly endless. Keep reminding yourself why you started in the first place and don’t EVER, seriously EVER, let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything you set your heart and your mind on! There will ALWAYS be haters, unfortunately some who are closer to home than you expect, but no matter who they are or what they think, if you stay true to who you are through it all the right people will walk right next to you on your journey.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with HairTailoredByTay – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Hairstylist at Salon Thrive in Santee, I specialize in color and am most known for my Vivids! I have been passionate about color since I started my cosmetology journey. I take the most pride in the experience I give my clients. It is not ALWAYS about great hair, it’s about how great you make them feel when they are in your chair. We are all humans and we all need an ear to listen or a shoulder to lean on every once in a while. It’s about loving people a little extra some days.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I feel like opportunity is everywhere and the only thing that stands in people’s way is their own minds.
