Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrien Paynel.
Hi Adrien, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started downhill skateboarding around 2014. I would bomb the hills around my house, and those of friends and we thought we were inventing a new sport. Eventually, a friend of a friend introduced me to the downtown community in San Diego. I started to go to small races and fell in love with the sport and the people. Since then, I’ve been able to travel the world and skate some of the most beautiful mountian passes on earth. On the competitive side, I recently clinched the title of World Champion in 2025 and had some notable success in the World Roller Games in 2024.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not always been smooth. Some potholes here and there, you could say. Knock on wood, I’ve only gotten some fractures, but nothing too serious. Though all things considered, it’s a pretty safe sport. At races, we line the track with hay bales, and we wear a full-body leather suit for protection and aerodynamics.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Other than skating. I am finishing up my batchlors degree at SDSU, and to supplement the skating, I work at Girard Gourmet, a small deli and bakery in La Jolla Cove.
