Life & Work with Alex Ponce

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Ponce.

Hi Alex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up always being fascinated with architecture and graphic design, I knew I was going to land somewhere in a creative industry and career. After high school and illegally downloading photoshop (whoops, don’t tell anyone) I was hooked. Deciding to go to design school and soaking up everything and anything I could when it came to design, I quickly landed a dream job of mine at a local big craft brewery down here in San Diego and the rest has been a fun roller coaster. Whether it’s been me working on some fun projects with some well-known brands or the scary feeling of going full-time freelance for a year, I wouldn’t change anything about my design career and its journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely has had its ups and downs. After being on cloud nine landing a job at Stone Brewing where I got to mix some of my biggest passions of design and craft beer, my last thought in my head was anything happening to me while I was there. Right before my year work anniversary, there was a round of layoffs and I was unfortunately part of it. With my design professional career just starting and new to a feeling of failure, I was getting in my head. Was I good enough? Did I mess up? The answer was no but there was definitely a period of time of me being extra hard on myself about my work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Alexander Ponce focuses on branding, packaging, apparel design, and art direction.

With a degree in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of California, Alex is an expert in branding for start-ups, merchandise for established companies, and everything in between.

Alex is the senior designer at a brewery in Southern California. When not designing, Alex is a proud plant daddy and coffee snob. Alex lives in San Diego with his wife and mutt.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Do what you love. You’ll spend half your life doing it.
