Life & Work with Alexandra Rodrick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Rodrick

Hi Alexandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
NOX Consortium was born out of a desire to continue a tradition of collaboration, creativity, and artistic freedom by its three founders — Alexandra Rodrick, Anthony Whitson-Martini, and Michelle Law — all opera singers who trained at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and who now live across the country (and world! Alex lives in Berlin).

The artists of NOX have a track record of creating unique opera and concert experiences in San Diego, both as a group and individually, and they wanted to gather these experiences under a single umbrella to make it easier for artists to create and share their music with the greater San Diego community.

Their first concert series — “Ecology of Souls” was performed in October 2024 at the historic Villa Montezuma in Downtown San Diego.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nox Consortium as an entity is still in its early phases, but the artists’ past experiences producing musical events in San Diego have always been aided by a joy of the music, a collective support for each other’s ideas, and a wish to bring San Diego audiences an up-close-and-personal experience. Many of their productions have been bold and sprawling, like a recital series called La Cena è Pronta, in which singer Joshua Arky prepared recital attendees an entire meal WHILE singing, which of course come with many logistical and skill-related challenges. Each production is a learning experience though, and while there are certain things we’ve learned how to do with more ease and other things we’ve learned to let go of, the road has been paved by a mutual commitment to bringing each project to fruition.

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected the ability of the artists of NOX to bring their music to their community, and those years were beyond challenging. We’re really excited to be back in the business of live music.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
NOX Consortium produces up-close and dynamic classical music events in the greater San Diego region, with a focus on song-as-theater and opera.

Past notable projects that we’re particularly proud of include a fully-staged, immersive production of Le Nozze di Figaro in 2017, a concert series called LA CENA È PRONTA (2019-2021), which explored the connection between food and music, and the Mosaic recital series in 2022, focusing on how synesthetes experience sound and visuals through music.

The artists of Nox are focused on making classical music immersive and accessible to modern audiences. We’re proud of our connections with other organizations in the community and the intimate relationship we’ve built with our audience.

What makes you happy?
Collaborating with each other and encouraging each other to realize our music-related dreams, however obscure or niche they may seem, because that encouragement makes it possible!
