Life & Work with Alexia Bonnell of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexia Bonnell

Hi Alexia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Being born and raised in San Diego, I was surrounded by nature and vibrant culture, which shaped my love for design, music, and travel. As a kid, my room was my sanctuary—I’d create vision boards, rearrange furniture, and turn it into a little universe that felt uniquely mine. That spark of creativity planted the idea that one day, I’d help others create spaces that truly feel like home.

Life took me on some unexpected detours before I landed in design. During college I pursued a B.A. in Integrated Marketing Communications and I became deeply involved in social justice work, focusing on helping those impacted by human trafficking. A connection through a nonprofit led me to Haiti twice, where I helped organize summer camps for at-risk youth. We shared stories, music, and meals—simple but powerful moments that left me with a deep appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit. Those experiences gave me a new perspective on gratitude and inspired me to infuse more meaning into everything I do.

By 2021, I decided to follow my instincts and jump into design, even without formal training. I landed a home staging job and quickly worked my way up to Lead Designer. Over the next few years, I staged more than 100 homes, worked on exciting projects like staging properties for the Altman Brothers (Million Dollar Listing L.A.), and redesigned the Compass lobby in Mission Hills. I learned how to highlight a home’s best features, create spaces that tell a story, and connect with clients to truly understand their needs.

During the pandemic, I also rediscovered my creative side and began painting. Inspired by my love for Pink Floyd, music became the soundtrack to my creative process, helping me transform my spiritual journey into visual expressions on canvas. I also love learning about the universe and space. So you will see those elements in my work as well including the moon, stars and planets. My artwork has been featured in shows across San Diego, including Barrio Logan and La Mesa, and can be found on Instagram at @SoulfilledArtbyAlexia.

As a designer, I’ve also had the honor of being featured by brands like AllModern and Poly & Bark, showcasing my ability to merge modern aesthetics with inviting, personalized spaces. My philosophy is simple: great design isn’t just about following trends or rules—it’s about creating a space that reflects who you are and feels like home.

Now, I’m on my own design journey, blending everything I’ve learned—my passion for storytelling, creativity, and human connection—into meaningful projects. Whether it’s transforming a room or creating a mood, I’d love to help elevate your space. You can connect with me at AlexiaBonnell.com.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but those challenges have shaped who I am and the path I’m on. Early in my career, stepping into design without formal education felt like a big leap. I had to trust my instincts and prove my skills through hands-on work, which meant putting myself out there and learning on the fly.

The pandemic was another turning point. Losing my job in 2020 forced me to slow down and reevaluate what I truly wanted. That period of uncertainty was both humbling and transformative. It gave me the space to explore painting, reconnect with my creative side, and rediscover my passion for design.

Another challenge has been navigating the balance between creativity and business. As a home stager, I learned how to merge artistic vision with strategic thinking to create spaces that not only looked beautiful but also resonated with buyers. That experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of always finding inspiration, even in high-pressure situations.

Each struggle along the way—whether professional setbacks, moments of self-doubt, or simply navigating an unconventional path—has helped me grow. Looking back, I’m grateful for those moments because they’ve allowed me to build a life that feels authentic and aligned with my passion.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a designer currently freelancing in San Diego, focusing on creating spaces that feel personal and inspiring. My work blends modern design with earthy tones, organic textures, and natural elements—a style inspired by the beauty of Southern California. Also very inspired by the vintage and contemporary pieces of Parisian design. I specialize in home staging, interior design consulting, and art, bringing a unique blend of creativity and strategy to every project.

I’m known for my ability to tell a story through design. Whether it’s staging a home to captivate potential buyers or working with a client to design their dream space, my goal is always to evoke emotion and create an environment that feels inviting and authentic. I’ve staged over 100 homes, worked on standout projects like redesigning the Compass lobby in Mission Hills, and collaborated with brands like AllModern and Poly & Bark.

One of the things I’m most proud of is trusting myself enough to take the leap into design without formal education. I’ve built my career by combining natural talent and a passion for helping others.

What sets me apart is my approach. I believe design isn’t just about following trends or creating something pretty—it’s about creating a space that feels deeply personal and reflective of the person who inhabits it. I’m not afraid to break design rules, mix styles, or experiment to achieve something that feels right for my clients.

Right now, I’m freelancing and loving the flexibility to work on projects that inspire me.

What’s next?
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing my freelance design business and taking on projects that truly inspire me. I plan to expand my reach by working with a diverse range of clients and create one-of-a-kind spaces that reflect individuality and tell a story.

I’m also exploring opportunities to collaborate with other creatives and brands, which has always been an energizing part of my journey.

In the future, I’d love to work on larger-scale design projects, such as boutique spaces, showrooms, or even set design. I’m looking forward to refining my craft, staying inspired, and continuing to share my vision for intentional and meaningful design with more people.
