Life & Work with Ana Wilkinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Wilkinson.

Hi Ana , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been a registered nurse for 12 years. I have worked in the Emergency Department and recently dabbling in the ICU. I have been doing COVID relief all around the US and recently volunteered to help with COVID relief in Mumbai, India. I was in India for 7 weeks which was a remarkable experience this summer 2021. I am now in Texas helping with COVID relief since the numbers are increasing rapidly.

I have 2 amazing sons and a firefighter engineer husband studying to be a captain for next year. I am genuinely blessed with an amazing husband and kids.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a nurse has its challenges, especially with COVID-19. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, it was hard not only for the patients but for the medical team. We were afraid that we would contract COVID and pass it on to our families. Cold shower outside before coming into the house or even sleeping in a hotel so we won’t pass the virus to our loved ones. We also had challenges in the hospital when family members could not see their loved ones, and Facetime was their only way for contact. My motto was no one dies alone, and I held their hands until they died. A lot of traumatic and mental events during this time for all the medical staff.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a mother, nurse, and wife.. I also travel around the world a do medical missions to give awareness of different diseases and cultures. If time allows it, I am also an actress. I have done commercials and so has the family.

What I am most proud of are my kids. They are resilient and are my biggest fans, and my husband as well. I hope one day they will travel with me and do medical missions as well and make this world a better place.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
How I define success as a nurse is by changing someone’s attitude. If I can make them smile or even make them laugh, it will be a successful day.

100% of my patients don’t go to the Emergency Room to be happy. They are usually upset or in pain. Most patients take it out on the nurses or the faculty. But if I can change their attitude and say we are there to help you and get you better, but we need to do it together, it usually helps, and we are off on a good start! Sometimes there is some dancing involved with my patients, as I am called the dancing nurse.

Success is family. Incredibly proud of my kids and husband.
