Life & Work with Arula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arula.

Hi Arula, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been making music since I was a child; recording my songs on cassette tapes and all. Music has always been a part of my life, even though there were phases where I tried to quell the desire to create, it has always returned to me and held me in the challenging times.

My relationship with music deepened as I play in various bands from the time I was a teenager through my early 30s. Around that time I began learning music production using Ableton Live. I loved playing in bands, but I craved the ability to create my own songs, songs that would more represent the kind of music that has inspired me the most.

I’ve always loved music that has felt slightly dark or haunting, with qualities that I would describe as sensual and heart-opening. The music of Tori Amos, Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, and Bjork inspired my early songwriting. My most recent influences span many genres, I really admire works by FKA Twigs, Florence and the Machine, Viken Armen, Nicolas Jaar, Tora, and Banks to name a few.

At this point in my journey, I really aim to make music that isn’t restricted by genre or inhibited by what others might think. I have the pleasure of working with various talented collaborators and producers right now like Quiet Son, Kompass, Ejé, and a few others. These collaborations really fill my cup and broaden my perspective of art.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey with music has been full of peak moments and ecstasy, but also full of tears and grief. Again and again, I’m reminded that the only reason to make art is simply for the sake of creating, and the healing that lies within the process. Once we have expectations, we tend to get pulled away from the essence of our creations. I would say that it’s always a beautiful time to make art, and it’s a gift to choose to make art, but it’s never “easy” to be an artist. However, the more I release any attachments or expectations around sharing my gifts, the more peaceful the process becomes.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a vocalist, songwriter, producer, DJ, and sound alchemist. I love creating various types of music. I really love to experiment with Dark Sensual Pop, though lately, I’ve been experimenting more in the genres of Deep House and Downtempo. I’m probably known for having a distinct voice and different style. I’m proud of how I have branched out and tried new things while still being true to myself. To me, this is the secret to success; to not get lost in the world of trying to impress others, but simply creating things that you love. And while I am immensely grateful for my supporters, fans, and friends, at the end of the day it means nothing if I’m not my own biggest fan.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I feel so grateful to the various collaborators that I have right now, though I’m always open to exploring new collaborations. People can support me by finding my art on Spotify, Instagram, or Soundcloud, or purchasing my music from Bandcamp. Every bit of support means so much to me, deep gratitude to all of you for following my journey!
