Life & Work with Austin Steele

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Steele.

Hi Austin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Formed in San Diego, CA, Creature Canyon encapsulates the fiery energy of indie/alternative rock with waves of modern psychedelia. The band consists of members Austin Steele, Ryan Amyot, Aaron Lund, and Luc Fralic. Known for their thrilling and captivating live performances, Creature Canyon has received nods from Billboard, Paste, and many other industry tastemakers. Building upon their prior EPs ‘Life I Know’ and ‘Did You Want That,’ the band has made a considerable leap forward in their songwriting journey with their newly released debut album ‘Remarks’, seeking to tackle themes that deal with the emotional conflicts of love and loss through a journey of self-discovery. To capture their vision for this new era of music for the band, Creature Canyon enlisted the virtuosity of producer Christian Lum (Private Island), recording engineer Mike Schuppan (Foster The People, Young the Giant), mixing engineer Jordon Silva (Vance Joy, The Avett Brothers), and mastering engineer Brian Lucey (Cage The Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys). Creature Canyon’s debut album ‘Remarks’ is out.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is never a smooth ride as a band or artist. We have dealt with a few lineup changes in the band. Creating as a band is always a very affluent journey. Early on as a band, we would be playing on a Monday or Tuesday night with. Nobody in the audience except our friends. But it didn’t even matter; we were proud to be playing the music we created for people. That was one of the things that has kept us thriving since 2017. Everything we release musically, we really love and are proud to share.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the singer of the band Creature Canyon. We started the band late in late 2016. We played our first festival, “Xfest” in 2017 with Phoenix and Empire of The Sun, thanks to my friend Andrew Rowley. My friend John Cooper sent him some of our music into the 91x station, and Rowley gave me a call and asked us if we wanted to play. We ended up playing Kaaboo in 2018 with Foo Fighters, Robert Plant, and so many great Artists. It was a true rush. We had our first interview from “Billboard” (Shout out Fred Bronson) and was in their “Top 5 Moments” of Kaaboo article. We have had such a cool journey so far.

2020 we were working on our debut album “Remarks” The Pandemic hit, and a lot of things were shaken up, but eventually, we finished the album, and it was released in September 2022 while we hit the road and did our first National Tour. 28 dates in like a month, driving across the country in our van, we bought and played our music for the country. It was. a great experience. Our car broke down in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. That is a place in the deep south you don’t want to be broken down in the middle of the night, so we got a quick hotel there as our trip to Nashville was postponed for the night. We. woke up early and had a mechanic change out our radiator,  and we were on our way. We did our successful US tour at the end of 2022 and.

Now we are in 2023, where we have our first headlining show at The Belly Up May 18th. It’s gonna be a really special night for us. You can find tickets in the link we have provided. We have amazing artists “Peach Cooler” and “Veni Sun” opening up for us. All of us were San Diego Music Award nominees this year, so it’s gonna be an amazing night of local talent.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel like one of the most important qualities is consistency. If you stick with something and keep chipping away, you will see results. I really believe it’s that simple. Whether is small progress or massive progress, that momentum is something you can really create with persistence.
