Life & Work with Brady Mickelson of Encinitas, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brady Mickelson.

Brady Mickelson

Hi Brady, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career of photo and video started like most, documenting my travels and fun things I did with friends. I first took an internship with a local Seattle company called KAVU. At the time I was studying design in college but it quickly changed to more of a photo and video emphasis. I got the opportunity to edit videos from some of the best wingsuit pilots, paragliders, kayakers, and climbers and knew that this was what I wanted to do. With a background in classical piano I would stay up all night mixing visuals with music to create fun edits. I then wanted to shoot the videos I was editing and dove in head first taking a camera everywhere. Fast Forward 10 years and I’m still doing the same thing, just at a larger scale. It’s a constant learning process running a small business and I’m forever grateful for the community of people that I have around me to help out when it’s needed. So I owe a lot to them. I believe that if you work hard, over deliver, and are fun to be around, work will come your way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The freelance world is never a smooth road, but that’s what makes it fun. If everyday was sunny you would loose appreciation for how good sun feels. I believe those ups and downs are what make life interesting. The biggest struggle is just dealing with the ebb and flow of work. Jobs seem to all come at once, so its a constant balance of being really busy and overwhelmed to sometimes needing work to pay the bills. Finances can be tough to understand and very irregular.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in video and photo production predominately in the outdoor space. I am a lover of mixed media, film, and not doing things the easy way. I sometimes direct, sometimes shoot, and sometimes sit at a desk for weeks building out an edit. I love branded commercial spots and the documentation of people doing their thing. I like weird angles / perspectives, being somewhat scrappy, and thinking outside the box. I don’t really know what I’m known for, but I hope its for making cool imagery and keeping a smile on while doing it.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Woh that’s a tough one… I played a lot of ball sports growing up. Baseball, basketball and football, so probably something involving those. Shoutout to my awesome parents for giving me that opportunity. I also had a Nieghbor with a trampoline, so I have a ton of fun memories bouncing around with skateboards strapped to our feet.
