Life & Work with Brandy LeBlanc of San Diego, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy LeBlanc

Hi Brandy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is a testimony to the verse, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28.

My path to become a REALTOR® and life insurance agent was not a straight road. I was born and raised in San Diego, CA. There was a lot of dysfunction in my home life growing up, but I found school was a place I thrived, and I was accepted into San Diego State University (SDSU).

During my time at SDSU, I discovered a passion for studying English and literature. The stories I read helped me work through a lot of the obstacles and hardships I faced in my own life; I was particularly inspired by Frederick Douglass’ Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. I also enjoyed learning how to communicate more effectively in my speech and writing.

Simultaneously, I had a job as a tutor through SDSU where I went to local, underserved schools and tutored students within the classroom. It was during that experience I decided that I wanted to be a teacher. I remembered what it was like to be a kid in school, especially middle and high school, and to feel a lack of support and guidance, so I wanted to be a light for others like those within the school system had been for me.

After earning my bachelor’s degree in English and my teaching credential from SDSU, I started working for Literacy First Charter Schools (LFCS). I taught 9th grade English at Liberty Charter High School for five years. Within that time, I earned my real estate license. In order to build my real estate business, I needed to make a decision regarding how to manage my time to accommodate real estate work. LFCS was such a blessing to me that it was difficult to part ways, so I worked as an 8th grade academy teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.

During that time, I sold my first property. However, I found that in order to be fully available for my clients and meet all of their needs within the buying or selling process, I needed to have more flexibility and availability within my schedule. In addition, I earned my license to work as a life insurance agent, so I made the decision to leave my full-time position as a teacher.

Now, I am spending my time growing my businesses as a REALTOR® and a life insurance agent. My passion for teaching is still very much at the forefront of what I do, but I get to teach people about the home buying or selling process or how to reach financial goals.

I say that my story is a testimony to God works for the good because growing up, finances were a topic of stress and anxiety in my family, and we eventually lost our home to foreclosure when I was in high school. Because I know the hardship of living in financial distress, I am thankful and excited that I have learned the tools needed to break free from that cycle for myself and that I get to serve others in educating them on how to make good choices financially and plan for the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been anything but a smooth road. What played the biggest role in my decision to become a REALTOR® was losing my dad in 2021. Although I had been faced with numerous challenges and obstacles prior, his passing put my faith to the ultimate test.

When I decided to move forward with becoming a REALTOR®, it was mostly because prior to becoming a teacher, my dad had wanted me to become a real estate agent, so we could do business together since he was a contractor.

I saw becoming a real estate agent as a way of honoring him. Also, walking into open houses brought back memories of all the times he had taken me to work with him in other people’s homes over the years when I was a kid.

However, becoming a REALTOR® was not what healed me from the pain and heartbreak of losing my dad. Ultimately, I decided to fully surrender my life to Jesus Christ and trust that He would lead me not just out of the suffering I was facing but into an abundant life.

I have had to make many difficult decisions out of faith and trusting that God will provide, especially by taking on the risks of moving from having a full-time salaried position to commission-based pay, but I am taking God at His Word that He is who He says He is, and He has met every need I have had, even when it has looked impossible.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The two brokerages I am contracted with are eXp Realty as a REALTOR® and Symmetry Financial Group as a life insurance agent. I do what both roles imply: sell real estate and life insurance.

When it comes to selling real estate, I am passionate about helping first-time home buyers purchase their first home. I love the educational side that comes along with first-time home buyers, and that I am able to support and guide them in such a huge decision. I also enjoy having conversations about how people can build wealth by owning multiple properties and figuring out a plan to achieve that goal.

Regarding life insurance, I am very passionate about Indexed Universal Life (IUL) policies. Structured and funded well, they can be a great tool to help people reach their financial and life goals while still being alive in addition to making sure loved ones are financially taken care of after passing away. Also, I am able to bring greater value to home owners by offering mortgage protection to relieve themselves and their loved ones from the burden of their mortgage in the event they are unable to pay it due to unforeseen qualifying events.

Ultimately, I see life insurance as a compliment to real estate that can work together to help people achieve their life goals.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding the right mentors or people to network with can be challenging at first because it requires going outside of your comfort zone to meet new people. Thankfully, eXp Realty assigns new agents a mentor if they are not joining a team. My mentor has been great and has been able to walk me through every step of the process. My clients essentially get two agents for the price of one with her as my mentor.

I have also met many great people within the real estate industry throughout San Diego, CA, and I have come to find it is a small world. There are so many connections within the industry, and it really is just a matter of putting yourself out there by going to networking events.

As for life insurance, it is all remote work, and I work under a very supportive team, so they are all the mentorship and resources I have needed to lean on to get started and make sure I can best serve my clients.

Overall, finding the right people to work with can really make or break your success in the business. It goes back to why I wanted to be a teacher. It is important to feel that you have the right support and guidance and that the people you work for care about you. If you have not found that yet, keep looking—the right people are out there!
