Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Lopez.
Hi Carmen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Before photography, I was actually a marriage and family therapist. The job was rewarding but definitely exhausting and I found myself leaning into photography as a way to relieve some stress. Sure enough, I photographed my first wedding less than a year later and the rest is history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s no secret the pandemic was hard on everyone. Likewise, it was a particularly tricky time for the wedding industry. We were navigating dozens of reschedules, a lot of justified emotional decisions from our clients, and trying to figure out how to stay afloat during unpredictable times. It taught me a lot and really solidified my business practices.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am primarily a wedding photography but also love brand work. I would describe my style as editorial, colorful, and having a very “magazine” feel. While I am based in San Diego, the majority of my work is in Palm Springs. It’s my happy place and holds a lot of memories from my childhood. I have also come to find that my style of photography and editing is super cohesive with the mid-century aesthetic, so it brings a lot of joy for me to photograph there.
What were you like growing up?
I was always an outgoing oddball. It was super important to me to make other people laugh, and I found a lot of joy in being silly and eccentric.
