Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Urbano Andersen.
Hi Carmen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a self-taught cookie artist currently based in San Diego, California. Before becoming an artist, I spent many years working as an attorney in Mexico, but I eventually chose to leave that career to pursue creativity full time.
What began as learning to decorate cookies grew into something much deeper: a way to tell stories through edible art. Rather than seeing a cookie as a dessert, I see it as a canvas, using royal icing as my primary painting medium.
Throughout my career, I’ve been honored with multiple first-place, “People’s Choice Awards”, across different categories, as well as awards for “Most Innovative Cookie” and “Excellence in Royal Icing Technique”.
My work has also been featured on Food Network, and I’ve served as an international judge for online cookie decorating competitions, helping recognize artists from around the world.
After taking almost a two-year pause from social media and teaching, I returned with a renewed purpose. I’m currently developing two exciting projects: CookieArt Society, an educational movement reimagining cookie decorating as fine art and personal expression, and InspiraColor, a creative color platform designed specifically for sugar artists. They’re both still evolving, but they represent the next chapter of my work.
Every collection I create is an invitation to discover that even the smallest canvas can hold a powerful story.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. The biggest challenge wasn’t learning the technique, it was having the courage to completely change careers. Leaving a successful legal profession to become a full time artist meant starting over, building credibility in a very competitive industry, and believing in my own voice as a self taught creator.
Another turning point came when I stepped away from social media and teaching for nearly two years. That pause allowed me to reconnect with why I create, not just what I create. Sometimes growth looks less like constant visibility and more like quiet rebuilding.
Today, those challenges have become the foundation of my work. They’ve taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of creating art that has meaning beyond decoration.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create fine art on cookies using royal icing as my painting medium. My specialty is hand painted, highly detailed edible artwork that blends classical painting techniques with mixed media, volume, storytelling, color theory, and character design.
I’m best known for transforming cookies into collectible works of art rather than traditional decorated treats. Whether I’m painting portraits inspired by beloved characters or developing original conceptual collections, my goal is always the same: to evoke emotion and invite people to experience sugar art in a different way.
What I’m most proud of isn’t the awards, it’s contributing to the recognition of cookie decorating as a legitimate artistic discipline. Through my artwork, teaching, and the creative projects I’m currently developing, I hope to inspire artists to approach creativity with the same depth and intention found in any fine art studio.
I believe that even a cookie can become a canvas capable of telling powerful human stories.

I’d love for people to see sugar art with fresh eyes. It’s a medium that combines painting, sculpture, design, and storytelling in a truly unique way, and I believe it deserves a place within the broader conversation about contemporary art.
I’m especially excited to share the next chapter of my journey through CookieArt Society and InspiraColor, two projects born from the idea that creativity can educate, connect, and transform. I hope readers will follow along as they come to life.
