Life & Work with Carynne King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carynne King.

Hi Carynne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I knew from the time I was nine years old when I got my first manicure and pedicure that the salon environment was something I absolutely loved. I enrolled in beauty school during high school and began immediately after high school graduation. I was licensed by the time I was 19 and in the course of the past 19 years have dedicated myself to education in cutting, color, extensions, and business. I obtained my Master’s in Psychology and spent several years in that field only to learn that the beauty industry was the best for me. I returned to the salon in 2019 and have hustled to build a clientele again, educate myself on the newest trends, techniques, and product lines. In the course of two years (and during COVID), I built a clientele as a commission stylist, became a booth rental stylist, and have this year opened my own salon suite. My goals are never ending and I have much more to accomplish both personally and professionally but am so incredibly grateful to be a part of this world and make people feel and look beautiful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ha! No, not at all. I was a single mother at the age of 21, I spent the next decade working on my education and figuring out this thing called life. There are definitely struggles in all fields, in all areas of life; however, I believe we all have a path and that we learn from our mistakes, our experiences, only to become better versions of ourself for the world and our family to embrace. Having children and dealing with childcare issues has been the biggest struggle for me to work, build a business, and maintain a business. Although I am dedicated to everything in my life, I am detailed, hard-working, and independent. I know when I put my mind to something, I will do it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hair colorist and extension specialist. I have specialized in many areas because of my love for learning. In this field, I feel it is a must to always be learning. My experience in multiple salons and education has given me the knowledge and expertise to confidently handle color corrections, and while that is not everyone’s favorite, I love doing them; it’s quite the fun challenge. I just love all things color, I love corrections, transformations, and blonding so I have given much of my focus and time on those areas to specialize in. I am most proud of the education and experience I have to back my practice. Many stylists just go from beauty school to a studio and I truly feel this is a disadvantage to themselves and to potential clients. Education helps build the foundation for experience; experiences drive and carve out a niche in this field. What sets me apart from others is not only am I freaking great at what I do, I truly view each head as a canvas for me to paint. I view a head of hair differently from many other stylists, and with my background in psychology, I provide an experience at the salon, rather than just “a trip to the salon”. I just love what I do!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
This is a tough one! I have lived here for about 20 years and have lived many places. I love that our city is so active. I love the ability to go hike a mountain and be at the beach in about 30 minutes. Or, if you want to go the desert or mountains for snow, you can! I also love all the restaurants and outdoor things to do. Oh! And, of course taco shops!! The things I like least about our city is the cost of living, traffic, and a certain sense of entitlement from certain populations, I won’t say who…but you know who you are!
