Life & Work with Cynthia Alexandrescu-Bacus of Las Vegas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Alexandrescu-Bacus.

Hi Cynthia , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had a love for music and specifically techno. I was born in Belgium and from Romania so I was super blessed to be cultured, my mom also went to raves with huge speakers and subwoofer’s while being pregnant with me so now that I think of it, it’s always been in my blood haha. I began my music journey about eight years ago while touring with my husband, Shaun (better known as Hekler), working as his part-time tour manager and videographer. Those experiences gave me a front row seat to the music industry and allowed me to build meaningful relationships and connections along the way.

It wasn’t until late 2022 that I officially stepped into producing and DJing myself. By then, I had already learned so much about the business side of music, which prepared me to pursue my own path as an artist. Shaun has always included me in his creative process, whether it was studio sessions or writing camps, and that exposure taught me invaluable lessons. Having him as a mentor in production continues to shape my growth, as we spend every day in the studio together, refining my skills and guiding me through challenges I face in the music industry.

I also take pride in having a strong sense of self and direction. I’ve learned the importance of knowing my worth, staying true to my brand, and confidently saying no to opportunities that don’t align with my vision or artistry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’d say my journey has been smoother than I expected, mainly because I spent years preparing before officially launching the CRUNCHi project. Having Shaun by my side has also made a huge difference, he’s guided me through the industry and supported me every step of the way.

That doesn’t mean it’s all been easy. The music industry comes with its own pressures, and balancing everything can be a challenge. Between producing, touring, running my media brand (CYNFULMEDIA) as Hekler’s videographer, background acting, and even hobbies like table tennis, life can definitely feel overwhelming at times.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make hard techno music and play cool shows. I got to play in a huge warehouse and do my first 360 show, I also got to play in an ice cream truck and parking garage which is nuts. I’m known for being the snacking queen. I love my “crunchi” snacks like chips and making aggressive but cute music. I’m most proud of being able to make my dreams come true every day. I recently quit my job to pursue my dreams. I think what sets me apart from others is that I dig into my European roots for inspiration in my music. I listen to a lot of older Romanian music from groups like Akcent, A.S.I.A, O-Zone, etc. I incorporate that along with making music thats bass heavy. Majority of my friends all come from trap music and dubstep. So i’ve learned a lot of the sauce from them. It’s definitely different compared to techno but can fit nicely together.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Oh man, every day as an artist feels like a risk. I quit my job to pursue music full-time, all while competing with thousands of others chasing the same dreams. Even small decisions feel risky like choosing which tracks to release or send to labels, or waiting to get booked for a show. Playing at some of the big official after-parties in LA is also its own kind of risk, but that’s part of the excitement.

For me, risk is just part of the process. It’s what pushes me to grow, take chances, and make music that’s bold and unapologetic. The risk helps me chase my dreams even more!
