Life & Work with Devean Ramos of Lake Forest, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devean Ramos.

Hi Devean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Devean Ramos, and I’ve loved taking pictures since a young age. When I was young, I always found myself taking the family camera and taking pictures of everything. The camera was a Nikon J1, nowadays I have it on my desk to remind me of where I started and my childhood. Growing up I developed that passion and branched off into what I was originally taught which was video and cinema in High school. I was a freshman learning how to video edit using Final Cut Pro X. developing my skills I moved onto a higher video level in high school a level at which seniors in high school usually get.

During this time, I was finally able to rent gear out and my starting camera was a Canon t3 with a 50mm lens. I always found myself renting out the gear to take pictures of my friends rather than finishing my video projects. Over time I finally bought my own set up and It was a Canon t7i with the same 50mm lens. I was set.

It all was going great until Covid. During this time the lack of creativity was at an all time high, deprived of doing what I love. During the end of Covid, I found myself taking a trip to Seattle, WA. during this time I packed all my gear and figured I may do something out there. It was all well until one night at the hotel, I was watching a show on Netflix called hype house. I was watching all these influencers talk about how they just started and made it. Funny enough that show made me realize I have ALL the gear to pursue what I love, and I gave it my all.

Here I am now, submitting the questionnaire for a magazine interview.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road and I think that’s the beauty of it. If it was a smooth road I wouldn’t enjoy the little goals and little reach that I can get. From COVID to getting myself out there and from defying the beliefs my family who believe in the safe path, I believe hat all the bumps are meant to shape you and help you in the long run.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I would say my work has recently take its own shape. It took a while for me to find my style and to refine my work. I am a digital photographer who primarily uses harsh lighting and strobes to make my subjects pop. I specialize in Fashion Editorial, swimwear and overall lifestyle photos. A photoshoot I did with a great friend and model I shoot with, Chloe Green, is what defined my look and was a huge turning point in my work.

Although most of my work revolves around shooting with women, I have always made it a safe environment for the girls, that is my number one priority. I believe that’s what sets me apart from other people is definitely my style. Harsh strobes and a different editing style from what peoples idea of “photography” may be. Ultimately I am proud of myself for continuing to have the drive to pursue what I want, better yet make it a reality.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Nothing changes if nothing changes. This has stuck with me through my whole developing career. There is change in everything and sometimes a small sacrifice of a normal routine could be the breaking factor that could change you career.
