Life & Work with Dina Maeva of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dina Maeva

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dina Maeva is a Baltimore-born musician whose roots trace back to the vibrant island of Madagascar in Southeast Africa. Deeply inspired by the rich musical traditions of her heritage, Dina’s artistry is a testament to the profound role music has played in Malagasy culture and her own life. From an early age, she was immersed in a world of melodies and rhythms. Her father, a passionate advocate for Malagasy music, was in a band that brought musicians from Madagascar together, often rehearsing into the late hours of the night. This environment not only cultivated Dina’s love for music but also gave her the unique opportunity to observe and learn from seasoned performers, including her current bassist, Rade (popularly known as Bema Bass), who was part of her father’s band before joining Dina to form their own group, BeMaeva, years later.

Dina first picked up a microphone at just three years old and began her musical journey as a self-taught guitarist at age seven, exploring chords and melodies on her own. Around the same time, she started formal piano lessons and sang in her local church choir, honing her vocal abilities. By the age of 11, Dina had already performed her first out-of-state gig in New York City, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey in music.

When it came time to choose a high school, Dina faced a pivotal decision: to pursue her passion for music or follow another path as a potential professional soccer player. Ultimately, her deep connection to music prevailed. She attended the prestigious Baltimore School for the Arts, where she studied classical vocal performance. The rigorous program mirrored a double major, with half the day devoted to academics and the other half immersed in intensive musical training, including theory, history, choir ensembles, and extensive rehearsals. The experience of singing for hours each day was demanding but deeply fulfilling, solidifying her commitment to music.

In 2014, Dina founded BeMaeva, a band whose name reflects her middle name, “Maeva,” meaning “beautiful” in Malagasy. The band’s mission is to inspire audiences to “Be Beautiful,” blending Malagasy rhythms with classic genres to create a sound that is as eclectic as it is soulful. BeMaeva has performed at notable venues and events, including Baltimore’s Artscape Festival, Light City, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, and even international stages in Madagascar, where the band gained significant recognition in their homeland.

After moving to San Diego during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dina faced the challenges of adapting to a new city as an independent artist. With live performances on hold, she focused on songwriting and eventually began performing locally once restrictions eased. Now, she is channeling her energy into her upcoming acoustic EP, set to release in 2025. The project features light instrumentation with a focus on vocals and guitar, offering a raw and intimate look at her artistry.

Dina Maeva’s music is a reflection of her life experiences, blending vulnerability with strength and drawing inspiration from the trials and triumphs of her journey. Her work speaks to Black women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ communities, and anyone overcoming adversity, with the hope of inspiring them to rise above challenges and embrace their greatness. Through her heartfelt compositions and electrifying performances, Dina continues to share her message of beauty, resilience, and cultural pride with the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Dina Maeva’s journey has not been without its challenges. Like many artists, she has faced moments of doubt, often influenced by external voices questioning her ability to meet deadlines or fulfill her goals. Balancing the demands of adult life with her passion for music has been another ongoing struggle, requiring constant effort to find harmony between work, personal responsibilities, and creative pursuits. The move to San Diego during the COVID-19 pandemic further tested Dina’s resilience, as the isolation and lack of live performance opportunities left her feeling disconnected from her craft. This period of disconnection deepened into depression from 2022 to mid-2024, during which she felt estranged from herself and her music. With her throat chakra blocked, she struggled to express her true voice, both emotionally and artistically, leaving her unable to perform for nearly two years. Despite these setbacks, Dina has emerged with a renewed sense of purpose, using these experiences to fuel her artistry and reconnect with her true self. Her music now carries the depth of these struggles, offering a powerful message of healing, resilience, and the transformative power of self-expression.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a musician and songwriter, I create music that blends my Malagasy heritage with classic genres, resulting in an eclectic, soulful sound that is both culturally rich and universally resonant. My work specializes in telling stories of resilience, self-discovery, and empowerment, with a focus on inspiring Black women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ communities to rise above challenges and embrace their greatness. I’m best known for founding BeMaeva, a band that incorporates Malagasy rhythms and traditions into contemporary music, sharing a message of beauty and cultural pride with audiences worldwide.

One of my proudest accomplishments was performing in Madagascar in 2020 for an audience of over 400 people, an experience that deeply connected me to my roots. The performance was featured on TV Plus, a prominent Malagasy news network, further amplifying the reach of our message and celebrating the fusion of my heritage and artistry.

Another proud moment has been staying true to my artistry through life’s challenges, whether it was navigating doubts about my goals, balancing the demands of adulthood with music, or overcoming the isolation and depression I experienced from 2022 to 2024. That journey of disconnecting and reconnecting with myself and my music has given me a deeper understanding of my purpose as an artist.

What sets me apart is my ability to merge the essence of Madagascar’s vibrant musical culture with the disciplines of classical training and the raw authenticity of acoustic sound. My upcoming acoustic EP, featuring just vocals and guitar, is a testament to this unique blend and my ability to create music that is intimate yet impactful. Above all, my music is a reflection of my life experiences and a channel to inspire others to find their voice, heal, and rise toward their own greatness.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality I believe is most important to my success is staying true to my roots and my authenticity. Staying connected to my culture and actively promoting Madagascar has always been a driving force in my music. It’s not just about creating songs; it’s about sharing the richness of my heritage and inspiring others to embrace their own identities.

Authenticity is at the core of everything I do. While many people prioritize fame or going mainstream, my focus has never been on chasing popularity. Instead, I value being respected as an artist and as a person. For me, success is doing what I love every day—making music that resonates with others and staying genuine in the process. This commitment to authenticity and cultural pride allows me to create music that is meaningful, impactful, and true to who I am.
