Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Pompey.
Hi Dominique, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I wish I could tell you that there’s some grand story behind how I got started, but there isn’t. I’m just a girl with a passion for creating. I live by Allen Ginsberg’s quote, “Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness.” I believe in existing – existing loudly and living in your truth (whatever that may be).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say that it has been. The path of my journey has been all for the best, though. I’m learning so much on my way. If I can be honest, the biggest struggle I’ve faced is overcoming “Imposter Syndrome.” Imposter Syndrome is when one literally can’t fathom or believe that their success is deserved or that their success has been rightfully attained due to their efforts or mastery. I’m creative by nature, and whenever I embark on something new, no matter how big or small, little voices inside my head always sneak in and tell me that I’m not capable, I’m not worthy, and I’m pretty much in over my head. The worst part of it all is that I’ve believed it in most cases! Imposter Syndrome has caused me to re-evaluate many of the things I’ve created, leaving me feeling empty. Even when someone can see how bright my light shines, sometimes I can’t see it for myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Oh wow… what do I do? I asked myself the same question when I was first presented with this opportunity. There goes that Imposter Syndrome again, lol. I teach for a living and a creative by nature. I am a blogger, crafter, and author when I’m not teaching.
My blog, DominiquePompey.com, is a lifestyle blog. Lifestyle being motherhood, fitness, travel, and everything else in between. I started blogging in 2015 and just recently relaunched at the start of the new year. On the blog, you can find everything from personal narratives, do’s/don’ts, tips/tricks, and must-haves, all while giving a glimpse into my little world with the hopes of inspiring you and other mommas alike. Before the relaunch, I focused a lot on women’s empowerment. I had a segment called WCW (Woman Crush Wednesday) where I interviewed women that were inspiring to me. They were entrepreneurs, bakers, scientists, teachers, and influencers – the list goes on! I presented them with an opportunity to tell their stories in hopes that their stories would inspire other women with dreams like theirs. I also had a segment called “After Birth.” In this segment, I interviewed women and gave them the opportunities to share their pregnancy, birth, and NICU journeys. “After Birth” came about after my daughter was born three months early, and we spent 80 days in the NICU. I shared my entire pregnancy journey online. In doing so, I connected with moms worldwide who were experiencing or in doing so, I connected with moms worldwide who were experiencing or had experienced something similar. I was able to take something very traumatic and create a space for moms to shed some light and let other women know that they are not alone.
I’ve always had a crafty side. I make everything from shirts, and wooden plaques, to worksheets (I’m an educator at heart with six years under my belt). I’ve been doing this for a very long time.
I’ve authored two books, “I am The ABCs of Affirmations.” They are interactive empowerment books written to help young girls and boys understand the power of always speaking positivity into their lives. Readers have the opportunity to reflect and create a narrative that says, “I do, I will, and I can – Watch me”! My vision is to have children work through the book with someone they view as a role model who could help them through their feelings and understand their purpose more in-depth. I believe it is very empowering for a child to create positive beliefs in themselves, so it is much harder for people to tear them down. We must learn to take control of our belief systems, and the younger we start, the easier it is.
I don’t have a specific accomplishment that I am most proud of; all of them hold a special place in my heart and have helped me during a specific time in my life. I will say that I am proud of my work’s effect on others. Seeing that I have helped someone, no matter how big or small, keeps me going. Knowing that none of what I am doing is being done in vain and that I am making a difference means the world to me.
What sets me apart from others is my authenticity. I’m not trying to make people believe something that isn’t true to who I am and how I live. Everything you see and everything I do is real.
What do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in knowing what I want out of life and dedicating time and effort to making it happen – intentionality. I believe in timing – timing is everything, and everything happens for a reason, with some things being within your control and some being out of your control. I would say that the biggest takeaway, regardless of the likeness of a situation, be it good or bad, is that you must reflect and give yourself grace. In no particular order, think about what went right and wrong (if anything). Think about the things that you liked or didn’t like. Take time to prepare mentally, physically, and emotionally for your next steps. Take a break if necessary. Meditate. Whatever you do, just don’t quit. Quitting is never an option.
