Life & Work with Ellaine Guzman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellaine Guzman.

Hi Ellaine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started baking during the start of pandemic about 3 years ago. I started baking just for fun, I also didn’t have my license back then and was only baking chocolate crinkles and Banana Bread. I started just baking for my families until I had enough good words and courage to sell them in our local Escondido groups. Then comes the ube cheese pandesal. My brother used to go home in the Philippines often and would bring cheese from there, I would then put them in the freezer so I’d freeze and so it can last longer. That is where I got the idea of baking breads. Afterwards, I finally applied for my business license and food permits and started enrolling in online baking classes. Then I was invited to join events and started offering different pick-up locations to my customers. So here I am today, licensed and registered. Although it seems like I do this daily, I still see this as my part-time job. I never imagined that that this “for fun” only will still exist up to this day. I now call this my business, and it’s been a hard journey but it’s worth it not only I enjoy baking but because I have a very supportive family and my customers just keep supporting me. I am married and have 2 wonderful kids. They inspire me to do better and encourage me to keep going.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s really challenging having to bake and at the same time attend my full-time work. Besides that, there will always be competition or people not supporting you. I use to get affected when people say negative stuffs about me, but now I just accept it and let it go. I thought myself that not everyone will like you and will like what you bake. I just always tell myself to improve. We can only do so much for people, we can’t please everybody, as long as you enjoy what you do and turn the impossible to possible. All is going to be well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Account Admin Representative in Kaiser Permanente. Been working for them for about 5 years now. I really love this company, benefits, and the team that I am. At about a year ago, they decided to let us work from home. I have been working from home and they offer a lot of overtime including Saturday and Sunday… So, I work almost every day plus baking hussle.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of the childhood memories I definitely won’t forgot is when we used to play in the streets when we were kids and all we have to worry is what kind of game we will play.
