Life & Work with Elliana Capurro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elliana Capurro.

Hi Elliana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was a little girl, I had huge dreams and aspirations to do many amazing things. When I got into high school, I had a huge shift in my life. I wanted to go to an Ivy League school and be the perfect student, but that became less and less of a reality to me as high school hit me like a rock. Through the course of my first few years there, I couldn’t help but be so disappointed in myself for not being the perfect student like I had planned. I felt extremely unmotivated and let down by myself. My mindset was no good and I needed something to pick me back up. Around Junior year, I met some really amazing teachers who put me back on my feet and back on the right track. I changed my mindset completely due to these teachers and staff at my school. I set a new goal in life for myself that year; to become a teacher and help as many students going through what I was. Those teachers were truly incredible people with extremely kind hearts and that’s what I strive to be for the rest of my life. I want to be a mentor, a leader, and I want to teach. I want to give back to the world in the way that it helped me. My life goal ever since then has been to become a high school history teacher. It’s what I’m extremely passionate about. Every time I lose motivation or I’m struggling, I use becoming a teacher as my motivator and it puts me right back where I need to be to succeed. I now go to a local community college and plan on transferring to a 4-year where I will then complete the rest of my schooling. There’s nothing more I look forward to than becoming a teacher and making my classroom a safe space for all of my students.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was not a smooth road on my way to where I am now. As I said, I started to struggle in high school. There were times where I was bullied about my teeth, which used to be very crooked. It even drove me to get braces even though I was super afraid of them! My mental health also wasn’t at an all-time high. At one point I just lost motivation and lost control of my own schedule. I became unorganized and very stressed. The first couple of years were very hard on me and I felt like I had no more control over my life. I wasn’t the only one either. Many teenagers feel this way and it’s often overlooked. I was lucky enough to have some amazing teachers to help me put myself back together, but not everybody gets that privilege.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Right now, I’m a full-time student who also plays tennis, is on the Board of Directors for my school, and I work a part-time job as a waitress. I also really enjoy modeling from time to time and have been told I’m pretty good at it! On top of that, I help care for four amazing dogs back home! They’re my favorite. I’m now known very well for pursuing my passions and managing my time extremely well. I’m also known for being a huge helping hand for others. When my friends are struggling, I help them make up a “game-plan” to get them to where they want to be. I’m also known for being a great motivational speaker and leader for others. Oftentimes when people need advice or need a motivating push, they come to me.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years I plan on having a classroom that doubles as a safe space for my students. Not only do I want to teach them the wonders of history (because history is awesome by the way!) but I also want to be able to help my students by keeping them on the right track or leading them to it
