Today we’d like to introduce you to Eusebio Travis Sevilla.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to San Diego 11 years ago with my wife and first son to take a job with High Tech High North County. Since then, my family has another son and I have transitioned to working for Canyon Crest Academy in Carmel Valley as the Digital Art and Design instructor. I am also a resident visual artist making art about little robots obsessed with nature at Distinction Gallery in Escondido. I am also an avid practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the largest obstacle to uprooting your family to move are the uncertainties involved in a major move and commitment to abandon the support system you develop in a city, community, neighborhood, etc. Then upon arrival, there are struggles to find your place and create a new network, all while adapting to a new place, new job, and a growing family.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My primary day job is a High School art and design teacher at Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito Union High School District. On top of that, I work with SDSU and the SDCOE mentoring new teachers and am an invited guest lecturer at Cal State San Marcos. I also currently have a spot as a resident artist at Distinction Gallery in Escondido where I show my painting work. Additionally, I work sometimes as a model and have recently become a published author with a contribution to a book on Nonviolence in education through the Ahimsa Institute out of Cal Poly Pomona. I don’t know if there is anything in particular that makes me special relative to anyone else. I do have a passion to always learn and grow in I try to bring that to what my students do in our class. I think for me, finding ways to say yes to opportunities and creating meaningful relationships in the world is something that I find satisfaction in.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think my ability to relate to people on just about any level is of benefit for me in life, work, etc. It allows for me to find common ground with people and make those connections that provide all the cool opportunities I have had.
