Life & Work with Hazel Geniza of Mission Valley, San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hazel Geniza

Hi Hazel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was in the dental field prior to being a tattoo artist. I felt like I needed something more so I pursued the idea of tattooing. My brother has been in the industry for a couple years already so I asked him if I could apprentice under him. The rest, you can say, is history.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it always hasn’t been a smooth road and in some ways it still isn’t. Being a freelance artist includes so many risks you end up taking that you don’t realize when you’re starting out. I’ve learned over the years that riding through the dry and abundant seasons just comes with the territory. In the beginning of my tattoo career I also started with very little clientele. I remembered late nights drawing and working on my portfolio; showcasing my work through social media. I’ve learned that consistency and persistence has brought me where I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a tattoo artist and I specialize in black and grey florals, geometric, mandalas, Japanese, and fine lines. I am mainly known for my floral designs. I also work alongside my brother. We have a private studio located in Mission Valley called One off Tattoo. Not many people can say they work with their sibling, let alone drive a business together. So that’s one thing I can say that I’m incredibly proud that we’re able to create together. I believe what sets me apart from other tattoo artists are the 1 of 1 custom designs I create for my clients. Majority of the time my inspirations come from my clients’ life stories, which I think is pretty spectacular. Since I do work in a private studio, I’ve also heard countless times that our space gives a familial energy and my clientele appreciates the privacy and all around comfortability and safety they feel when working with me.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Yes! I love podcasts and audio books. On my way to work I listen to the following. These books and podcasts have helped me evolve as an artist, an entrepreneur, and as a human in general. They continue to inspire me to do my best in all areas of my life.

Super soul conversations with Oprah on podcast, Rich as F*ck by Amanda Frances, Chill and Prosper by Denise Thomas, You are A Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero, We should all be millionaires by Rachel
Rodgers, and the Compound Effect by Darren Hardy.
