Life & Work with Heidi Zin of Ojai Ca

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Zin

Hi Heidi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a visual artist from the onset. It was always my desire to perfect my craft for my own improvement and then to share with others. I did attend art school, The California College of Art in the Bay Area. I taught art to children in elementary and middle school for several decades providing a foundation for future creators.

I have illustrated several children books, the latest being “The Courageous Heart”

My creativity is my passion and gives me life.

I am adept at all types of mediums, watercolor, oil, acrylic, egg tempera, sculpture. I think I love drawing the best.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been several struggles along the way.

Believing in myself and that my craft is worthy, to not sabotage the self. Being open to exploration.
Finding sales spaces and audiences.
One has to stick to their guns when money is tight and others pressure you to do something else because of their own fears of survival.
Having to raise children, well, they come first.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a master drawer. I have a deep affinity for the skill of shamanism, journeywork. I have a keen imagination, I use it to create unique imagery.
I love developing form, watching it take shape before my eyes. Looking for the light and shadow to develop the image.
Creating texture.

I taught myself to paint with my feet, so that I could dance with color in my paintings. No brushes, just my feet. like a child who loves mud between their toes. It is a sensual experience. This allows me to be totally free with the paint, color and image. Not laboring over it nor thinking too much, I allow it to flow. Painting in built up layers. It always amazes me the images that come forth.

What does success mean to you?
Being happy with myself and what I create and being able to share it with others who appreciate it. This makes me feel good.
Having unstructured time in the studio or sitting in nature to observe, explore and try new things without stresses.
Being in the studio most days. Having the emotional support from friends. Sales are nice too.

Pricing:

  • My large drawings $10,000. each one takes one to two months, I also make prints of these $90 – $150 dependent on size
  • the foot paintings being more spontaneous in nature are prices considerably less
