Life & Work with Holly Ennis of El Cajon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Ennis.

Hi Holly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been professionally tattooing since 2019 but started my journey in 2015. Art has always been a big part of my life and I never thought it was possible to make a career out of it. After graduating college and working in the corporate sector for a few years, I made the shift. I started tattooing all of my friends and co-workers out of my apartment for a few years, all for free. Any evening or weekend I wasn’t working, I would tattoo. I finally got a chance to work at a local shop for a few years before branching out to other studios. Growing in this industry has been the biggest challenge and blessing, only possible because of the people I’ve been fortunate enough to work with and learn from. I can only hope to progress each year for both my own studies and for my clientele.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Tattooing is one of the hardest skills I’ve had the opportunity to work in. Working on people, physically, designing pieces that tell people’s stories, putting memories on skin, it’s a challenge every day, a challenge Im blessed to be trusted with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I tattoo primarily in Black & Grey realism. I also love doing colored florals. Realism has been my main focus of study for the last few years and it never gets boring.

What matters most to you?
Considering I just had a baby, being his mom is the most important thing to me right now. In regards to tattooing, giving my clients the best I can and continuously growing in my craft is so important to me. I hope to always be improving and giving better work to clients each year.

Pricing:

  • I price either by piece or by day. Larger projects that take full day sessions (6-7 hours) are priced by day and smaller pieces are quoted at a flat rate. I don’t like to price per hour so that both I and the client know what is being paid ahead of time and no one is concerned about that during the session, but only on the quality of the tattoo irregardless of time.
