Life & Work with Irina Khachian of San Marcos/Carlsbad area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irina Khachian.

Hi Irina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Irina — a mom of two girls, an artist at heart, and a passionate photographer who believes in the magic of childhood and motherhood.

My journey into photography started with my family. Though I studied science academically, I’ve always been drawn to art, beauty, and meaningful moments. I first explored this through a home decor shop, where I channeled my love for aesthetics and design.

But everything changed when I picked up a camera.

What began as a simple hobby — photographing my daughters and friends — quickly turned into something much deeper. I started taking photography classes, collecting props and accessories, and slowly building my dream one step at a time.

Over time, this passion blossomed into a full-time photography business, where I now specialize in newborn, maternity, and family portraits.

As a mom, I understand how fleeting these moments are — the softness of a newborn’s skin, the glow of pregnancy, the pure joy in a child’s eyes. I LOVE capturing these memories, preserving them for generations, and creating a space where women and children feel truly seen, celebrated, and comfortable.

Every session is personal to me. I genuinely love what I do — not just the art of photography, but the connections, the real emotions, and the trust families place in me to tell their story.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, I’d say it’s been a pretty smooth road — and I think that’s because I never approached photography as just a “business.” From the very beginning, it was my passion, my creative outlet, and something that brought me joy. I never felt pressure for it to be a source of income or success in the traditional sense.

I was simply doing what I loved — capturing meaningful moments, playing with light and textures, creating beauty, and connecting with families. That mindset allowed me to grow naturally, without stress or burnout. Of course, there were learning curves and late nights editing, but it never felt heavy because my heart was always in it.

It’s been a journey filled with love, creativity, and purpose — and I feel truly grateful for that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a portrait photographer specializing in newborn, maternity, baby, and family photography, and I work out of a cozy, fully equipped studio on the San Marcos/Carlsbad border. My style is soft, timeless, and natural — focused on capturing real connection, emotion, and beauty in every stage of early family life.

What I’m most proud of is the experience I create for my clients. From the moment they walk into my studio, everything is designed with care and intention — from handcrafted props and curated outfits to gentle posing and baby-safe practices. I want every parent, especially every mother, to feel seen, celebrated, and completely at ease.

What sets me apart is the deep emotional connection I bring to my work. As a mom myself, I understand how fleeting these moments are — the tiny fingers, the quiet snuggles, the glow of new motherhood. I don’t just photograph what things look like — I try to capture what they feel like.

I’m also very hands-on. I design custom setups for each session, prepare color-coordinated props and backdrops, and take time to connect with each child so they feel relaxed and joyful in front of the camera.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Absolutely — I truly believe it’s a great idea to find someone who’s more experienced and learn from them. Whether it’s technical skills, creative direction, or business and marketing advice — every bit of knowledge is valuable. Having a mentor or even just connecting with other professionals in your field can open your eyes to new perspectives and save you from common mistakes.

For me, networking has been incredibly important. Every time I meet someone new — whether it’s another photographer, a small business owner, or even a client — I walk away with fresh ideas or new inspiration for my next project or business move. These conversations often spark creative energy and help me think bigger.

Networking isn’t just about getting something — it’s about sharing, growing, and supporting each other. Surrounding yourself with people who are passionate, knowledgeable, or simply on a similar path can be so motivating. We all rise together.
