Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Rhodes.
Hi Isabel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Two years ago, I attempted suicide twice in one month. This was due to traumatic events such as being a victim of two armed robberies in one year and being sexually assaulted twice in my early 20’s. Since then I have been diagnosed with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, bipolar II, borderline personality disorder, and ADHD. Through relying on my support system, treatment team, and faith I have been able to overcome my mental health struggles. I’m a strong supporter of mental health awareness because of how drastically treatment changed my life. I am now a CSUSM graduate, recently competed in Miss California USA, and I was accepted into law school. I want the world to know that we are more than our struggles.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Healing isn’t linear and it has come with its struggles. At times it was difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel but people like my brother and sister-in-law made sure to consistently support me and remind me of their love. I heavily relied on those around me and my own inner strength to make it through the times I just wanted to give up.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m most proud of the work I do to raise mental health awareness. Although I did not come home with the Miss California USA crown, I did come home with an award for social media mental health awareness! Mental health is a huge passion of mine, I volunteer as an advocate through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As advocates, we reach out to our representatives in order to brainstorm ideas on how to prevent suicide. I’m also in training to become a Crisis Text counselor and I’m certified in Mental Health First Aid.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I was blessed to have found an amazing mentor at my place of employment, Fischer & Ritchey, LLP. Although I am no longer with the law firm, the lessons the attorneys taught me will continue to impact my life and career. The best advice I can give is to put yourself out there because you never know who will be receptive to taking you under their wing!
