Life & Work with Izzy Van Vleet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Izzy Van Vleet.

Hi Izzy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It was at about nine years old that my infatuation with decor and design came to fruition. My family had just moved into a new home in Nutley, NJ and I was given the opportunity to pick out all of the furnishings in my first ‘big girl’ room. It was definitely the design taste of a nine-year-old, with lime green and purple accents adorning the bed and walls, but my passion was evident. Every chance I got, I’d be rearranging the room and adding to the overall design with new stuffed animals, books, and blankets. Whenever I get a chance to talk with an old friend, they remind me how decorating has always been something that’s called to me – I was always switching up my room.

Now, as an adult, every room and every home I’ve had can’t stay the same for too long. Despite knowing how strong my love for design and decor was, I thought that maybe this would just be a hobby for me. I’d hunt for cute finds to make my house my own, study up-and-coming trends online and watch what my favorite professional designers were doing after logging off from my day job in digital marketing. I didn’t expect it to become anything more than that!

However, in July of 2021 when my husband and I purchased our little 1941 cottage here in San Diego, I realized how much I needed design to play an active role in my life to feel fulfilled, so I started Van Vleet Home. Since then, I’ve been working on projects to make homes feel like home – while still maintaining a bright and clean aesthetic. Combining design with function. I’m a strong believer that a home should be a reflection of the people in it, and I pride myself on my designs allowing that message to shine through.

Van Vleet Home is my passion project that I’ve been able to begin to expand to help others feel good in their space. I showcase all of my designs on @vanvleethome along with fun DIY projects to achieve design on a budget. I’m also in the works of expanding Van Vleet Home to include our brand of home goods, Van Vleet & Company. I can’t wait to see where the journey of Van Vleet Home takes my clients and me!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In any journey of chasing a passion project it’s never a perfectly smooth road. I’d have to say my biggest roadblock up to this point has been myself. It took me so long to realize that this is what I’m supposed to be doing and to even take the first steps into becoming a designer. I still have so much to learn about the ever-changing industry, so I know it’s not all smooth-sailing from here, but I am so glad I’ve at least overcome the first hurdle of DOING IT. I am finally actually on the path to helping people make their dream homes a reality and it’s an amazing feeling!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create home design with heart! I want the homes I decorate and design to fully embody the people that live in the home and have senses of personality throughout – nobody wants to live in a model home, but they do want something beautiful. My designs give the best of both worlds, function & beauty. Also, as a dog mom myself – I always want to make sure my designs are pet-friendly and able to withstand the wear and tear of a home with animals! My work has been featured by multiple brands online including AllModern and Burrow.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I LOVE vintage design! Mid-century modern specifically so I love to incorporate little bits of character from that time period throughout all of my designs – you’d be surprised how modern mid-century can really be.
