Life & Work with Jason Lawhead of Solana Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Lawhead.

Hi Jason, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started doing stand up comedy in my hometown of Cleveland Ohio in early 2004, after cutting my teeth there. I eventually moved to California in early 2007 to cut my teeth and test my talents in the entertainment industry. I had broken thru as a full time working comedian by 2013 and was opening for & performing along side some of the biggest names in the industry and still do. I moved to San Diego in 2018 after asking my now wife to marry me after several years in Los Angeles & have continued my stand up career while performing regularly at The Comedy Store in LaJolla as well as many other clubs in town, across the country, hosting fundraisers/ corporate events & more. Marrying and moving to San Diego has been the launch to a happier, healthier life and a more promising future.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never smooth, struggling comes along with everything especially with taking risks, and betting on yourself. Even when certain risks pay off there are always challenges along the way to attain those goals and there are always lessons to be learned on that path. Lessons how to handle success, how to handle failure, being consistent in your discipline, & working to avoid slippage. Being ready, staying ready. You always have to do the work within yourself to get better at everything you do and are. A comedian, a husband, a colleague, a friend, a son. You have to work at having your gratitude be greater than your gratification, You have to work at your taking responsibility be greater than your making excuses. You have to get addicted to doing the work on yourself and when you do even the bumpiest roads will feel smoother to navigate…

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Stand up comedy, I’m most proud of my growth & approach to the commitment of finding my authenticity on stage over time as a writer and performer. I think what sets me apart from others is what sets so many people who offer their talent and put themselves out there apart from others. I tell my story that’s unique to me and try to make it as funny and relatable as I can to the audience. I share my point of view and hopefully make it funny, fresh & insightful and that’s all I can do to set myself apart without trying to be different…

Any big plans?
My plans for the future are never stop challenging myself at what presents itself. Learning from others, being curious with open eyes & always being ready to be surprised at what the universe has in store. Who knows, perhaps this article will change my future depending on who reads it. But what I look forward to most in the future is continuing to travel the world with my wife and making the most of those memories for as long as we can.
