Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Ward
Hi Joel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Cardiff by the Sea and started magic when I was six years old and began my own business at age ten. By age fifteen I became a World Champion Teen Magician after placing 1st at the annual competition for the International Brotherhood of Magicians. That same year I was picked out of hundreds of magicians to appear on television with master magician Lance Burton in Las Vegas. I started performing for local restaurants, birthday parties and corporate events in the San Diego area. I have since performed internationally for all types of venues including casinos, cruise ships, weddings, fundraisers, and more.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve fully supported myself with magic since I moved out of my parents’ house at the age of 17. I’ve never had another job. Magic may look like fun, and it is, but it is also really hard work and is the product of years of discipline and practice. There have been lots of ups and downs including a serious wrist fracture, which could have ruined my ability for sleight of hand. With physical therapy I was able to recover and now have full range of motion back to be able to perform.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in interactive close up magic (also referred to as strolling or walk-around magic). I perform at private parties, corporate events, wedding receptions, and comedy clubs. I have a strong blend of skill and personality – I’ve been doing sleight of hand for 35 years and I also love interacting with people, so I have a good mix of technique, energy, and fun. I read people really well, which is important when approaching groups of people at a cocktail hour and gauging whether or not they want to see magic.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as doing what you love surrounded by the people you love. And I’m super grateful to be able to support myself working in the arts!
