Life & Work with Kaia Kazma of Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaia Kazma.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in the art world began when I was younger. I was a crafty kid and took after my mom who is a talented painter. Once I entered college I had the opportunity to take a ceramics class and I’ve loved the medium ever since! I continue do draw, paint, and work with fiber art mediums but ceramics have been a unique and useful art form to me. I’m currently continuing my work through MiraCosta college as well as a separate studio.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Once I decided to make a business out of my art I definitely came across difficulties finding customers. Lots of work goes into a ceramic art piece even if it’s something as simple as a mug. We live in a culture of overconsumption and it’s hard to find people who want to invest in quality ceramics when a mug at target is $2. Despite this, the art world is vast and I have found community among other artists who value hard work and quality.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do all sorts of artwork but I specialize in ceramics. Being a part of the ceramic world has taught me so much about the medium. I love all types of art but personally I love making something both beautiful and useful. This is what led me to what I make today- ceramic pieces that can be displayed on a shelf or used on the daily.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Growing up with lots of close knit friends really shaped me into who I am today. My best friends and I loved swimming at the beach, climbing trees, and really doing anything together. I would not be the same person without their influence.
