Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Novikova.
Hi Karina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My Journey: From Finance to Art With Purpose
I came to the United States from Kazakhstan in 2011. I hold a Master’s degree in Finance and, like many immigrants, I tried to build a career in my field. But deep down, I always knew something was missing. Finance never brought me joy — it felt more like a duty than a passion.
Since I was a child, I was always drawn to art and creativity. I just never knew how to turn that into a career — or even if it was possible. Then, during the COVID lockdowns, while the world stood still, I finally had a moment to listen to myself. I realized it was time to stop ignoring what my soul had been quietly asking for.
Almost by chance, I discovered the world of permanent makeup. I took my first certification course and began working on building my business from the ground up. I had no idea how much this industry would open my heart.
As I dove deeper, I discovered something truly life-changing: the art of 3D realistic areola tattooing — a procedure designed for breast cancer survivors. It was more than just art — it was healing, it was hope. I realized this work had a much deeper purpose.
Today, I am not just a PMU artist — I am a mother of three beautiful daughters, a business owner, and a woman who finally found a way to combine her creative spirit with meaningful impact.
I believe that when you follow what truly lights you up, the rest falls into place.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a woman, especially a mother, comes with its own set of unique challenges. There are always ups and downs — nothing about this journey has been easy. You constantly find yourself trying to strike a balance between your children, your career, and your dreams.
There were moments when I felt guilty for working too much and not spending enough time with my kids — and other times when I felt I wasn’t doing enough for my business. That emotional juggling never really stops.
But what I’ve learned is that it’s okay not to have everything perfect. The key is to keep going, to show your children that it’s possible to build something meaningful and follow your passion, even if it takes time.
I want my daughters to grow up seeing that their mom didn’t give up — that she created a life based on both love and purpose.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Looking ahead, my mission is to continue using my art to help more women heal — both emotionally and physically. I want to expand my work beyond traditional permanent makeup and offer advanced restorative services like 3D areola tattooing for breast cancer survivors, hairstroke brows for clients with alopecia, scar camouflage, and scalp micropigmentation. These services go beyond aesthetics — they restore confidence, dignity, and a sense of self.
My goal is to create a space where women feel safe, seen, and empowered. Whether someone is recovering from illness, hair loss, or simply wants to feel more confident in their skin — I want to be part of that transformation. This is more than a career for me — it’s my way of giving back through creativity and compassion.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is spending time with my grandmother. She was a classic Eastern European woman — very much shaped by the Soviet era. She was straightforward, sometimes a little strict, but also incredibly kind and loving in her own unique way.
Some of the best moments were our quiet evenings in her kitchen. Just the two of us, drinking tea, enjoying something she had baked — usually something simple but made with love — and listening to music on old vinyl records. There was something magical about those nights: the smell of warm pastries, the sound of crackling records, and the comfort of her presence.
Those memories stayed with me. They taught me the beauty of simplicity, connection, and the kind of love that doesn’t always need words.
