Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Sodre Ellens.
Hi Karina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Karina Sodre Ellens, 40 years old, I’m from Brazil my passion for skateboard started when I was 13 years old, I already practiced some sports like dance and high jumps when I discovered skateboard I feel in love it because I always liked playing sports, that’s why I went to college and do the degree Physical Education for became a teacher and teach how much sport is very important and change lives.
When a moved to California, I resumed skateboarding after undergoing major kidney surgery, and that’s where Brazilian Skateboard Academy was born.
That’s where I realized how important it was for me to share all the positive experiences and all the teaching that skateboarding and other sports could provide me, so I created a method for children age 5 to 15 learn skateboard safely so they become more confident to and increase their skills.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road is always difficult as we are women trying to conquer spaces in male-dominated sports.
I also had to have a wait a lot and good patience to participate in the process of transforming my bachelor’s certificate to get the license in California.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We have skateboard lessons for beginners, advanced, people with disabilities, and adults who would like to have a positive experience being in modality Street – Park/Bowl – Vertical.
In Brazil, I worked for 10 years with projects in elementary schools, clubs around the cities, and also with children who live in the slum’s areas
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love San Diego because the weather is really nice, and it has a lot of places to improve skateboard skills.
