Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Tran.
Hi Kristen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m 18 years old and I currently do lashes for a living! I graduated high school last year in 2020 and honestly had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. I tried to go to community college to pursue nursing but felt that it wasn’t for me so I took a year off to re-evaluate everything. Being inside most of the time during the pandemic helped me venture out to try new things. I started off by trying to doing nails for a little but never felt motivated or confident enough to continue. Though it was not my calling, I realized that I have a passion for beauty and cosmetics because I’ve been surrounded by it for most of my life. Many of my family members including my mother, does nails and my auntie is a makeup artist so I’ve always felt very comfortable and confident in that area. It wasn’t until April of 2021, I decided to invest in myself and take a 3-day eyelash extension course. By the end of it, I became obsessed with the craft and practiced every night on the mannequin and on my cousin whenever I’d get the chance. Starting out, I felt very confident in my work and purchased a bed to set up in the office room of my home located in Mira Mesa. I have been taking in clients ever since then and was able to quit my job working in foodservice. It’s been about four months since I started doing lash extensions and I have absolutely no regrets. I love doing lashes and being able to make people feel even prettier, it’s such an amazing feeling. I do plan to be doing this full time so I will be going forward to cosmetology school to become licensed and to further grow my business in the future!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, I can definitely say it has not been a smooth or easy road at all but I’m always striving for improvement. When I first started, I really struggled with my timing and making fans. It would take up to 3-4 hours (and still does sometimes) for a full set and every fan I made would fail on me. So I just started practicing every chance I got and watching videos on YouTube to help improve my technique.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a certified lash technician and I specialize in doing eyelash extensions. It is the placement of a synthetic lash placed onto your natural lashes, meant to enhance the length, thickness, and curl. I feel that I am most known for my classic sets as it is my most booked service and am most proud of seeing all my improvements in classic and volume sets these past four months.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
An important lesson I learned due to the covid-19 crisis was that I simply just needed to appreciate life and take care of myself more often. I say that because before the pandemic, I never really cared for my life as much as I do now and I wasn’t happy either. Seeing the amount of people and my own family being affected by the pandemic really made me more appreciative of everyone + everything around me. I was also forced to spend a lot of time alone since we couldn’t go anywhere, which caused me to do a lot of thinking and evaluating with myself. For me, this pandemic was a blessing in disguise and it was an opportunity to heal and grow.
