Life & Work with LeperKhanz Funky Irish Rockers of San Diego, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to LeperKhanz Funky Irish Rockers.

Hi LeperKhanz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We started as LeperKhanz in North County San Diego in the early 2000s, driven by a passion to blend traditional Irish instrumentation—like the fiddle and mandolin—with modern genres such as rock, ska, folk, and funk. In our early years, we performed four nights a week across Southern California, building our sound and connecting with communities through high-energy shows. Fast forward to today, we’re spread out but continue to come together for unique opportunities, such as performing at events like San Diego Shamrock, Concerts in the Park, and Oktoberfest, keeping our love for music and live performance alive in meaningful ways.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most things in life, the road has been full of ebbs and flows. In the beginning, performing four nights a week in Southern California gave us momentum and focus, but as time passed, families grew, priorities shifted, and maintaining that pace became more difficult. One of the biggest challenges has been the creative process itself. Writing music as a band isn’t as simple as people might think—while a painter can create a picture alone, in a band, multiple artists come together to craft one single picture of music. This collaboration is rewarding, but it just takes longer to complete as we work to align everyone’s ideas and inspirations. That process requires patience, but it’s also what makes LeperKhanz sound when it all comes together.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We’re always looking for new ways to connect and bring good energy to any event—LeperKhanz are a celebration ready to happen. We mix traditional Irish instruments, like the fiddle and mandolin, with modern styles like rock, ska, funk, and folk to create a sound that’s fun and unique. Our high-energy performances get people moving, whether at smaller venues or big events like San Diego Shamrock or Oktoberfest.

We’re proud of how we’ve stayed connected as a band over the years, continuing to make music that people enjoy. Each member brings their own creativity to our songs, making them special and different. With a mix of talent, teamwork, and love for what we do, LeperKhanz brings something memorable to every event.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Taking risks has been a big part of our journey as LeperKhanz. Some of us didn’t have corporate jobs, but others left steady positions to chase the freedom of building something meaningful with our music. Making music and running a band is like running a small business—it takes time, effort, and a lot of uncertainty. We’ve put in long nights performing and writing, not knowing if it would pay off, but knowing it was worth trying.

We believe risk is a necessary part of following your dreams. It can be challenging, but it pushes you to grow and trust yourself. Not everything works out, but every step helps you learn and get better. Taking risks is how we got to where we are today, and it’s taught us the value of hard work and passion.
