Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Delgado.
Hi Leslie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Sunsets Co. started as a small jewelry shop where I made clay jewelry and unique gold-plated pieces. However, this was only the beginning because I knew I wanted to do more. After much debate on what I wanted to incorporate into Sunsets Co. I decided on making candles and candle sculptures. Without knowing a single thing about candles, I bought a few molds online and went to my local Hobby Lobby, and I got all their cheap wicks, wax, fragrances, and jars. I soon learned that candle-making is far more complicated than I anticipated. I spent an insurmountable amount of time on research and tried different waxes, wicks, and fragrances. Eventually, I felt as if my items were ready to be seen; however, there was another obstacle in my path; getting the word out. Fortunately, I stumbled upon an Instagram story about an event at the FEMX Quarters in San Diego and got in contact with them and was accepted to participate in the event. Although it was three hours away from where I lived, I knew this was an opportunity I could not pass. I am eternally grateful to the people who continue to invite me to their events and those who continue to show their support.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This profession has not been easy; however, the accomplishments made it all worthwhile. One of the many struggles I have faced is retaining customers and being creative. Creativity is a big part of candle-making, and it can be challenging to come up with new ideas, video concepts, and products that make a great impression.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My business is formed on creativity Sunsets Co. specializes in Candles & Homeware, but we don’t just carry container candles; we also have sculptured candles. They vary from different body shapes to hearts. Having the body candles is something I’m proud of, especially when people walk up to my table and I watch as their faces light up when they see a candle that resembles them.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My mom has been my greatest support system to date. She travels with me to San Diego, she is my constant cheerleader on days when my depression is trying to kick in. I feel blessed to have someone by my side throughout this journey.
