Life & Work with Lindsey Alderman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Alderman.

Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been involved with music. I started writing songs and playing instruments as early as 8 years old and the passion for it never went away.

As a young adult, I realized I didn’t want to live a life that didn’t involve performing so I continued writing and started recording originals. After a couple years of putting out my own singles, I started getting show opportunities in my hometown (Lawrence, KS) which led to opening act opportunities for major artists. Once I started accomplishing my goals in Kansas, I knew I needed to spread my wings, so I packed my car, quit my job, and moved across the country on a whim.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t been smooth at all. Along the way, I’ve faced many challenges including sexism in the industry, internet hate, disappointing show turnouts, personal doubt. Choosing a creative lifestyle is not for the faint of heart but I’ve always loved it too much to quit. It’s proven to be especially challenging these past couple years. I’ve had to adjust to a completely new city while we’re all in a global pandemic. It’s definitely affected my show opportunities which haven’t been an easy reality to face, but the show must go on, even if that means eventually, so I keep pushing forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a musician and performer. I record all my own songs and currently have 3 projects on all digital platforms (Introspection, Brand New, and Never Sorry). The project that really put things into motion for me was my Soundcloud mixtape “Nobody’s Bitch”. My style is blended with feminism, confidence, sensuality, and vulnerability. I wear dominatrix inspired looks onstage a lot and I think many of my truest followers have discovered me at a show. I feel most confident in my performance abilities- captivating an audience comes really natural to me. I take a lot of pride in my shows.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Women are definitely on the rise. We’ve been seeing a shift in the music industry for a couple years now. It’s not as easy for us to get overlooked or underestimated- women are taking charge and taking over and I love it. I also think independent artists are going to become more notable than artists molded by major labels. Since social media, it’s become so much easier for creatives to build their audiences.
