Life & Work with Luz Moreno

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luz Moreno.

Luz Moreno

Hi Luz, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Hello!  I’m Luz Moreno, originally from Tijuana, Mexico, but I’ve been calling San Diego home since I was 16 years old. I am a wife, mom,  and coffee enthusiast. I’m the proud owner of Moreno Mugs and More. My passion is crafting unique mugs, cups, and other personalized items. It’s a pleasure to meet you!

My small business idea started in May of 2020, the year of the pandemic. Everyone’s stuck indoors, just scrolling on TikTok, and I’m thinking, “How can I make things a little brighter?” That’s when it hit me—I’ll start my own gig, making custom cups and mugs.

I kick things off by making my first investment, a Cricut Machine! Then started handcrafting designs on wine glasses, mugs, you name it. I even get into personalizing Starbucks cups. People love the idea of adding a personal touch to their daily coffee routine, especially when everything feels so uncertain.

As I’m getting the hang of things, I realize there’s a whole world of possibilities out there. That’s when I make the switch to sublimated cups and mugs. Talk about a game-changer! Now, I can whip up all sorts of cool designs with vibrant colors that really pop.

Sure, there were challenges along the way—like figuring out supply chains and navigating safety protocols. But hey, nothing worth doing is ever easy, right?

Before I know it, word starts spreading, and my little side hustle turns into a real business. It’s crazy to think that something I started during such a tough time could bring so much joy to people. Most of my business was done through Instagram, and later on, I opened my Etsy Shop. In February of 2023, I joined my first pop-up market in Chula Vista. Friendship Pop Up shop opened a door full of possibilities, opportunities, and a great community that was very welcoming. Since then, I have been able to be part of different community events and markets. I love to meet and interact with new people going through the same or similar journey as me.

With every cup and mug I make, I’m putting a piece of myself out there. And seeing how much people love them? That’s what keeps me going. Even as things start to get back to normal, my custom creations are still spreading smiles—and that’s pretty awesome.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

I would say that every journey has it’s challenges. For example, one of the main challenges that my business has faced is trying to stand out in a very competitive market. I mean, there are a ton of other businesses out there doing the same thing, so standing out is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Everywhere you look, there are custom cups and mugs popping up left and right. So, how do I make mine stand out from the crowd? That’s the million-dollar question. I’m talking late nights brainstorming, trying to come up with designs that’ll knock people’s socks off.

I tried to stick with “less is more,” but I also wanted to consider my customers’ needs. And it’s not just about the designs either. It’s about building a brand that people actually want to buy into. That means everything from nailing down my social media game to offering great customer service. It’s a constant hustle, but hey, that’s part of the fun, right?

But you know what? Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Because at the end of the day, when I see someone’s face light up because they’re holding one of my cups or mugs, it’s all worth it. So yeah, the struggle is real, but so is the reward. And that’s what keeps me going, day in and day out.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

What sets me apart is my dedication to quality and innovation. I’m constantly exploring new techniques and designs to stay ahead of the curve. Plus, I’m all about building connections with my customers, offering top-notch service, and making sure every cup or mug I create brings joy and satisfaction. Knowing that something I made can brighten someone’s day—that’s what makes it all worthwhile.
