Today we’d like to introduce you to Madeline Troedel
Hi Madeline, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Madeline Troedel, and I am a hairstylist focusing mainly on blondes in Del Mar, California.
I was born in a small town located in the heart of wine country just 2 1/2 hours north of San Francisco, with a population of just under 17,000 people. I’m a third-generation hairstylist, growing up in a salon I definitely swept up more hair than most kids I know. From the age of 9-16, I was at the salon almost daily. I did everything from sweeping to washing clients’ hair when someone was running behind. Even though I was very shy growing up, I developed relationships with those clients, helping me come out of my shell and become who I am today.
When I was about 8 years old, my dad took me on what he called an “adventure weekend.” He planned a surprise, and we ended up in San Diego. I instantly fell in love with San Diego and wanted to move. After graduating high school, I got the opportunity to finally move here and start cosmetology school at Paul Mitchell the school in downtown. I graduated and started looking for a job assisting a senior hair stylist (which is not very easy to find). After finding one, I lasted about two weeks and was let go because I wouldn’t work 7 days a week, with one of those days being unpaid training. After that, I started looking for a salon that would hire me as a level one stylist, and that is how I found myself in Del Mar. I worked at a commission-based pay salon for exactly one year and left. I knew I wanted more responsibility, so I started working for myself and renting a chair from a local salon in Del Mar. I wouldn’t change a thing, and I’m so thankful for the opportunities I was given from everyone I met along the way. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I definitely struggled with my first job, trying to be an assistant. They expect so much of your time for very little pay. A lot of salons try and take advantage of younger, inexperienced, stylists in my experience. With all of the free online education we have available to us, there is almost no reason to be an assistant for 2+ years unless that’s what you want.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love my blonde clients; they are definitely my passion. The way they get so excited after not getting their hair done for a few months is what makes me love it. Your personality changes a little bit after your appointment. If you’re blonde you know what I mean.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My core memories are at the salon and going to San Diego with my dad.
