Life & Work with Martín Fuentes of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martín Fuentes

Hi Martín, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
House music has always been an integral part of my life. Before getting my start as a DJ I would aways be hitting up the dance floors in the city…almost a decade now. San Diego is a very special city where house music thrives with vibes unmatched compared to anywhere else. Growing up in such an evolving and thriving music scene allowed me to dance to all sorts of music but more importantly having fun! It played a huge influence in how I play as a DJ.

I wanted to replicate that same vibe and continue the fun when I first decided to start DJ’ing about 3 years ago. Since then, I’ve been pretty fortunate to be able to share these experiences all over since my start, with the most recent being at Burning Man.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being able to curate an environment where people can dance, have fun, and be free is not an easy task. There’s a lot of time, work, and preparation that goes into each performance. It truly is a labor of love and a passion that I wouldn’t trade for anything else.

There was definitely a feeling of impostor syndrome when I first started; thinking “was I good enough?” for the longest time. Developing that confidence took some time and not something that many people get to see when I’m playing at each show.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Martín, and I am a disco house DJ whose mission is to put the fun back in funk!

I am known for bringing people to the dance floor and having them shake that booty through that funky sound — I want people to have fun at my shows! I am very proud of being able to continue sharing that experience to various venues, including San Francisco and most recently playing at the San Diego Pride Festival. Seeing everyone enjoy the performance has definitely one of my more favorite highlights in recent memory.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
It really does take a village! I would not have been able to get to where I’m currently at today without the help and support from my friends and chosen family. Our DJ collective, the Parasol Pals, was formed with the help and faith that both DJ Tim Sams and Cli-Nic put in me when we first started.

I also want to give credit to the amazing productions that The Dangle Zone, Staybad, and Desert Hearts would bring in. The parties that I’ve attended throughout the years have definitely been a big influence and motivator as to how to curate my sound.

I am very proud to be a current resident DJ for the Afternoon Umbrella Friends, a collective of very talented house music artists that put some of the best productions in San Diego. My burning man camp, Found It!, has been an amazing group to be involved in. The opportunities and friendships that I’ve established through them have made me the artist that I am today.
