Life & Work with Michelle Velchek of Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Velchek

Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I purchased the business 9 years ago, our twins were just starting 5th grade and I wanted to be closer to home and do something that would be part of the community. Carlsbad is where I’ve spent all my years in California and is such a special place to me and my family. I feel the shop has become exactly what I envisioned, I community gathering spot. Many of my regulars refer to it as “Cheers”.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been anything but a smooth road. The plaza was in the beginning of a redevelopment when I purchased it. There were ownership changes, construction issues and that redevelopment project took over five years to complete. Add in Covid and the closures we had to endure on top of being a fenced in construction zone. It was an uphill battle, but this community dug in their heels and committed to supporting us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I spent my career in IT sales and management. Wine was never on my radar until I purchased La Costa Wine. Then much like language emersion I dove into the world of wine and have really enjoyed building relationships with my suppliers and winemaking community. I have always love a good story and there are so many small independent producers with really great stories that I love sharing.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Have a really good, solid business plan but also be flexible enough to pivot. Build strong relationships with your customers, suppliers, vendors, producers and staff. They are all part of your team and path to success. Whatever business you are in have a strong support system. This includes at home; I wouldn’t be here today if not for the amazing support of my family.
