Life & Work with Mindy Fruhmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Fruhmann.

Hi Mindy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been crafting for years, and I literally love all forms of arts and crafts. At first, my artsy abilities were just with things I would make and give to friends and family. This love developed beyond that reach to friends of friends and beyond. After I met my husband, he encouraged me to do more, and from there we developed our joint business Rad Designs 1986. This business had a BMX backing and theme. During the pandemic I decided to start making epoxy tumbler cups, some of the first were BMX related which I gave to friends. After I saw those first few done, and the reactions to them I decided I really had a handle on them. From this point, Crafty Girl Gang was developed. My first year of tumbler making exceeded 600+ tumblers. A few of these even went to the UK and Australia. Again in 2021, I decided to add a new art form in the mix and purchased a laser. There was a little bit of a learning curve, but I caught on quickly and by December I was making 100s of Christmas and sports-themed ornaments. Some of these ornaments went to teams such as El Capitan’s football team, San Diego Junior Gulls Hockey, the San Diego Angel’s girl’s hockey team, and for the Cleveland National Forest Firefighters. Back to BMX, I had a huge hit with Rad Racing-inspired ornaments, and I made custom bottle openers for GT Bicycles. Besides all of these arts, I also do some outdoor portrait photography and occasional weddings. Basically, you give me an art medium and I’ll try it.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This has been a gradual road, and all roads have some bumps on the way. There have been many self-learning/teaching moments but all have led me to where I am now, and help me push to keep going forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I absolutely love custom work. Give me your ideas and let me run with them. Almost all things I do are custom, and I feel like that’s part of why people reach out to me.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I love sharing my creations via Facebook and Instagram. I also like sharing in specific groups related to my art to welcome feedback and to inspire.
