Life & Work with Moe Fosse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moe Fosse.

Hi Moe, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I grew up in an artistic household and, like many other artists, have been drawing most of my life. My parents encouraged art when I was little and kept every piece my siblings and I ever made, even the indecipherable finger paintings! Art became even more important to me in my teens because The Great Recession hit, causing my family and I to lose our home and many possessions. But even when I had few things, I could always draw- even if all I had was a pencil and some paper- and that was something that could never be taken from me. I was always encouraged to keep drawing despite all our setbacks.

As a child, I also fell in love with comic books and practiced creating my own. It was a huge blast, and I dreamed of one day becoming a writer and comic book artist. As I got older, some began to ridicule my hobby, and I eventually decided to give it up entirely. In the meantime, I continued painting and drawing (both digitally and traditionally) and honed my skills as a hobby artist, but I didn’t take it very seriously.

During 2020, I found myself struggling to adapt to changes during COVID and decided to dig through my old writing and comics again, discovering the first spark of joy I had had in months- What if I picked up my old hobby and did something entirely new? So, I started writing again just for fun and then started undertaking a massive creative project that I am working on to this day; and loving every second of it!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha, the road has almost never been smooth, but I can’t imagine how I would have turned out if anything in life had gone differently, so maybe it’s a good thing! Although despite all the roadblocks I already spoke about, I’ve always been my own worst enemy and can be very hard on myself. I often compare myself to others (a terrible habit, I know!) and wonder why I can’t seem to do as well as them. I tend to overwork myself as well and have had to learn the hard way that it’s imperative to take breaks to avoid creative burnout. Thankfully, my struggles have taught me to be more empathetic of others and have helped me make friends with some amazingly talented peers!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Funnily enough, I’ve always considered myself to be kind of a jack-of-all-trades and have worked with many artistic mediums over the years. As a result, I always struggled to choose just one to improve upon. But for a while, I was known for my space art, mostly paintings, and I even had the privilege of displaying my work at a prestigious art fair, which was thrilling!

I decided to shelve the space project, and nowadays am known for my comic book project “Prism World.” My goal was to create a colorful cartoon story for adults to enjoy, allowing them to connect to a world that was uniquely alien and human at the same time while also celebrating the concept of art. The story is free to read online and updates regularly, and I’ve recently undertaken a crowdfunding project to get my first graphic novel printed! Thinking back on my childhood dream and many of the things I have gone through, I am actually very proud of “Prism World,” and I know my younger self would just be so overjoyed to see it.

I think what may set me apart from many artists is that I’m not driven by profit. I love to see others enjoy my work, and just knowing that the story brightened someone’s day gives me more joy than any amount of money could. I even started my own video series to inspire other aspiring artists to reach for their own creative goals. I absolutely love it!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I participate in volunteer work regularly and read the Bible on a daily basis to keep a level head mentally. It’s helped me to balance out my life and connect with others (haha, as an introverted artist this has always been a challenge)!
