Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Spotts.
Hi Nathan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After freelancing solo for 20 years, I founded Metarch Photography in 2023, leveraging my extensive experience in visual multimedia production to bring to you that extra edge direly needed for todays saturated markets. Metarch takes pride in our personalized approach to content creation, with emphasis on storytelling to create direct connections between our clients and their audience. There’s no “one-sized-fits-all” mindset over here; every shoot demands a new perspective, and we excel at creating bespoke works for every unique shoot and client.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been ups and downs. Every few years I tend to move, which inevitably involves setting up the business all over again in a new market. The previous location was Charlotte NC, and now I find myself in San Diego CA. Hitting the pavement, meeting people, and making lasting connections can be tricky, as client expectations and social norms can be a bit different for each region. The upside is that Metarch has an established presence now on both coasts of the USA, leading to some great opportunities to travel for work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is known for its innovative approach and meticulous attention to detail, often blending elements of surrealism and digital art to create unique visual experiences. Over the years, I’ve gained recognition in a variety of places, including gallery shows in New York, magazines like Photoshop Creative, and online publications like My Modern Met and PetaPixel, and contributing photography to HOBI award winning designers in Connecticut.
Although Metarch specializes in commercial photography such as interior design, real estate, restaurants, and personal branding imagery, I personally don’t really have a precise specialty, though I always aim to create my photography using a variety of techniques in order to craft visually striking images.
The work that I love to do most tends to be dreamlike manipulations that merge natural photography with surreal elements, often inspired by science fiction and thoughtful storytelling. I’d say the work I’m most proud of is the stuff that I create just for myself, rather than for clients, though often times someone will see and love that work and hire me specifically to make something that I’d want to make anyway. Love it when that happens! Some examples of these would be my series’ “Visions” and “Pseudomorphosis,” and recently a conceptual project called “Revenge,” which was created with a slew of frequent collaborators in Charlotte and can be viewed on my personal website www.nathanspotts.com. These are generally much more abstract and creative than the commercial work that pays the bills. The commercial work funds my personal projects like these, which usually involve extensive travel and production planning in order to capture and collect the raw photographs that will go into the creation of the complete works.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I also occasionally make music! It was my first creative love, and it’s nice to return to it now and again. I recently released a music project called “Sons of Qaing,” which is Star Trek inspired Klingon heavy metal! Now there’s something you don’t see every day!
