Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicola Barrett.
Hi Nicola, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Picswithnix as a side job, getting me through college as I work towards my teaching credential at SDSU. It began with taking the odd headshot for a few of my friends in the theatre community. It has now grown so much I’ve shot a wedding, family portraits, couple photos and lifestyle shoots.
I’ve also started a ‘Dating profile’ series where I help clients create the perfect dating profile with some swipe-worthy photos and assistance with their bios. It’s been very exciting and fun.
I really enjoy helping people look and feel their best through the lens. I’m going to be launching a website update soon, and there’s a lot of exciting things bubbling up for my photography business.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The main struggles are pricing, it’s difficult to figure out how to price your product in the beginning, but as I’ve been photographing for a few years now, I can strongly say that I have very competitive prices to the average San Diego photographer. Keeping in mind that the average actor or person does not have $500+ dollars to spend on photos, I like to keep it within reach so anybody can feel like they can afford a nice photography session.

I am a San Diego based photographer, @picswithnix (on Instagram). I specialize in headshots, couple and family photos, lifestyle shoots and now dating profile packages.
I am really proud of how far my little business has grown from word of mouth. I am happy to be able to capture the best and most authentic version of my clients through the lens.
Something that sets me apart from others is my ability to make people feel super comfortable, I’ve worked in the entertainment industry as a performer, I’ve worked at Disneyland, I have a way of making people feel calm and collected and ready to pose. I also have very competitive prices with the average photographer, knowing that most people cannot afford the super expensive photo shoots.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in Scotland, so I’d say my favourite childhood memory is feeding highland cows on the way to school every morning. They’re my absolute favourite animal and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, I highly recommend you look one up. So fluffy!
