Today we’d like to introduce you to Parker Heath.
Hi Parker, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got my small business start with very grassroots beginnings! I was in between my final semesters of college, during a time when all classes were still on zoom, and I decided to take a semester off and wait to see if classes will get back to in-person instruction… During that time, I thought I would try sharing some of my artwork on Instagram and maybe open up an Etsy shop. Once I took that small leap of faith, it was off to the races! I soon found myself experimenting with new ways to present my work and merchandise it, which led me into designing throw blankets. The real momentum and excitement kicked into gear when I premiered my first and second throw blanket design. That’s when I really felt the spark that I potentially had something…
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not necessarily… Haha. There’s definitely been some easier more fun learning curves than others! … But going from not knowing a single thing about business, building a lasting brand, things of this nature, to then actually having a business with investments and what not, was a real wake-up call. I think really defining you overall goals and objectives as a small creative business owner is one of the hardest challenges. It’s very easy to get distracted and discouraged, especially when you test veering in a different direction.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an abstract painter, textile designer, and ceramic artist. My work with textiles and ceramics definitely is where I get to share my love for art being functional, whereas my work in abstract painting is where I can share my favorite ideas and practices within art. Most of my artistic designs lean to a more natural and organic composition of abstract shapes that empower and embrace the idea of the handmade gesture. What I tend to be most known for are my “mid-century modern – esque” textile designs that take on compositions with more realistic references/motifs in shape.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Staying true to yourself and what you believe in! Having self-confidence can take you farther than you’d ever imagine! Haha
