Life & Work with Renata Ottoni

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renata Ottoni.

Hi Renata, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for photography began when I was 18 years old, during my first year of college. I have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and landed an internship at a photography studio designing photo albums. From day one, I knew that I was more interested in photography than in graphic design. I completed my studies to earn my diploma, but my heart was already set on photography. During this time, I took numerous courses and specializations in maternity, family, and newborn photography.

All of this occurred in São Paulo, Brazil, where I am from. However, I was not content living in a bustling city like São Paulo. Therefore, seven years ago, I decided to move to California in search of a new lifestyle and experiences. It was here that I truly became a photographer. Exploring the most beautiful and diverse locations that only the Golden Coast can offer has been an incredible experience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path to get here was difficult. Firstly, because a profession that doesn’t necessarily require a degree, like medicine or law, makes things more complicated. Additionally, the market saturated with photographers of all kinds has made me consider giving up. But there is space for everyone, and it is crucial to listen to your heart and follow the path ahead. I did that, and today I am very happy with the profession I chose. I love the opportunities to meet new people and visit new places that my profession brings me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a portrait photographer. I like to do a little bit of everything, but mainly maternity, family, and couple photos. I am passionate about the golden hour that California offers, and I am very happy with the evolution of my work over the years I have lived here. At first, I was a bit apprehensive because it can be challenging to communicate with some clients when English is not my first language, but I am fortunate that my clients have always been extremely receptive to me.
