Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Saavedra.
Hi Rick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I remember that since I was a child, I always liked photography, one day my grandfather Oswaldo (catire) Sandoval gave me my first Kodak film camera, I was just six years old and I liked to photograph insects and landscapes… over time I explored more the art of photography when I started my studies in industrial design one of the subjects was analog photography, there I learned certain techniques that in the future helped me especially in composition.
Years passed and for a while, I was studying other things, including tourism business administration. It was when I started working in a large travel and tourism company and traveling around the world, it was there when my passion for photography intensified and I bought a Canon camera with interchangeable lenses and finally, I was able to appreciate the art of photography in all its glory. Then I moved to Mexico and started the wedding photography and cinematography business with my best friend Ronald Visconti, and since then, I have not stopped portraying happy moments. As a good traveler, I continued exploring new opportunities until I arrived in this captivating city, San Diego, and fell in love with the California sunsets…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been an easy road; I was born in a wonderful country, one of the countries with the most economic resources and natural beauties “Venezuela”. Unfortunately, with the establishment of the communist party, the situation became complicated and I had to leave my career as a travel adviser and reinvent myself, it was when I made the decision to leave my country and start a new adventure, I had to sell all my things including my camera to be able to travel with my daughter Fabiana, who was almost a year old, to arrive in an unknown country as an immigrant without knowing anyone and to learn a totally different business such as photography and filmmaking. But everything happens for a reason and today I feel fulfilled that I can make money doing what I love the most.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One of my specialties is filming weddings giving it a very cinematographic style; I like to create stories, play with emotions and that my clients enjoy the final result of my work. At the same time to develop my creative side, I like to portray film dancers, models, family portraits, and I also love taking photos of landscapes.
During the pandemic, as many events were canceled, I started selling my photographic prints and discovered that it is a very rewarding business. I think that what makes me different from other artists is that I always want each image to tell a story. My style is very different and unique. It combines vivid colors but at the same time has a moody and eclectic feeling. I like to break the rules and schemes of photography and above all look for the best composition.
The truth is that I am very proud to be able to represent my country as an artist, inspire new generations and teach them whenever I can. Everything can be achieved in this life with perseverance, a lot of passion and loving what you do.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I came to San Diego, and I was captivated by its amazing weather, laid-back people, and abundance of activities… This city has everything! Good waves, amazing restaurants, amazing sunsets, and of course, good Californian Wine and craft beers!
When you wake up in San Diego, you can drive east and hit the mountains or west and hit the beach. Either way, you are guaranteed great hiking. Torrey Pines State Park in Del Mar has a number of trails promising stunning views of the ocean. Once there, if you continue along the paved path to the end, the trails at the south end tend to be less crowded. For mountain hiking, Mission Trails Regional Park is an excellent option. Cowles Mountain has demanding hikes and can be ascended from numerous points. If you have gear, there are some challenging rock-climbing routes in the park. San Diego is a magical place where you can do different activities and enjoy good gastronomy with the family.
