Life & Work with Robert Frey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Frey.

Hi Robert, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, specifically Cupertino. If you don’t know where that is, check your iPhone – that is where Apple is headquartered. My father was a police officer and my mom as a stay home mom. I was inspired to go into dentistry was when I shadowed one of my dad’s closest friends for a summer during junior high and I fell in love with it.

Just the impact that dentistry can make on a person is so powerful. That same year, Extreme Makeover came out and seeing what Dr. Bill Dorman was able to do with his cosmetic transformations even solidified my decision more. We tend to forget how much an impact a smile has on a person’s self-esteem and confidence and being able to help people achieve the smile that they want is truly a dream come true for me.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think finding myself and growing into my skin was probably the most challenging part of my journey. I was very privileged to go to private schooling all my life and have my parent’s support along the way, but growing into my skin as a gay man was challenging. I grew up in a relatively conservative household and this topic wasn’t really discussed about.

Later in college, the process of coming out and the cognitive dissonance was a struggle. I had to juggle schooling, but also my own intrapersonal conflict had an impact. As time has gone, I look back at those moments in time and appreciate the personal and professional that growth that came out of it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a restorative and cosmetic dentist that practices in Mission Valley and Coronado Island. I am part of an elite group of dental practices called Espire Dental. We are a collection of like-minded dentists who share the same passion for providing clinical excellence and exceptional patient experiences. We are proud to provide the highest level of care for our patients.

Dentistry can be very stressful for many people for various reasons. I strive to make my patients feel comfortable, safe and secure. I love building strong relationships with my patients and meeting them where they are at. My goal is to help my patients achieve the highest level of health that they desire. Also, it’s important to have fun. I want people to have a joyful experience coming to the dentist.

What were you like growing up?
I would consider myself a nerdy kid growing up. Loved technology and always tried to find an excuse to go to Fry’s Electronics with my dad. In high school, I hid behind the camera a lot. I was Editor-in-Chief for my school yearbook, so I was very heavily focused on that – designing, editing, photoshop, etc. Sports didn’t really interest me, but I did play some volleyball in high school.
