Life & Work with Robert Morgan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Morgan.

Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am Robert Morgan, Senior Cyber Software Engineer, with Beyond Ordinary Software solutions. I deeply enjoy salsa and bachata, surfing, traveling, going to concerts, and helping folks as I can. I am also a Navy Veteran that has a Non- Profit, called Dancing Veteran San Diego, teaching veterans, service members, and their family how to use dancing as a means of dealing with life leading to healing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely not a smooth journey but I would not change this at all. There were numerous bumps in the road which, of course, were necessary for me to have a better understanding of which path was best. Programming is definitely not something one should take on unless you are a very patient and driven individual. Undergrad had a lot of sleepless nights, which was bad for me as a student-athlete, and my master’s was the most challenging degree I have ever undergone especially as an Active-Duty military with two TBIs. Again, this journey was necessary as I grew in multiple areas of my life which only made me better.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I believe I am one of the few that spreads so far across the information technology and computer science field. I started out as a programmer, which I still heavily do, but I also perform IT and cybersecurity tasks. I have also been highly invested in the Cyber Forensics field. When speaking with other professionals in my field, there are few of us that go this far and an example of another is the owner of the company I work for. The owner, Jacob Anderson, is also an amazing mentor to me in managing these skill sets while continuously encouraging growth.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The advice I will continue to give anyone starting out is to make sure you conduct extensive research on the field and commit to it once you set your mind to the journey. It is very easy for an individual to be discouraged in this field and make excuses. My parents were very instrumental in me staying on my path. Work on your certifications as they as very important in the field and find ways to practice what you have learned as much as you can.
