Life & Work with Rose Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Sanchez.

Hi Rose, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always knew I wanted to make films from a young age. I grew up in northern New Jersey. The area in which I grew up was filled with crime, so I grew up watching movies as an escape from my surroundings. When I turned 18 years old, I decided to take a leap of faith. I bought a one way ticket to California. I left the same summer that I graduated high school and started a new life in the Golden State.

At first, financially adjusting to the California price of living was very difficult. I had 2 jobs and was a full-time student. I hated my jobs, and keeping up with school was challenging. 3 years into living like this, I decided to take another leap of faith. I quit my jobs and decided to dive head first into making videos. This was a couple of years ago, and I can honestly say, that taking that leap of faith has changed my life for the better. I get to wake up everyday and do what I love. That’s the best thing I could have ever asked for.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am at today has definitely been bumpy. The main struggle that I had to overcome was my financial struggle. When I moved out to California, I did not have any family or friends to financially rely on. My immediate family was back home in New Jersey, and the rest of my family was in our home country of Dominican Republic.

My mother was very poor and could not afford to help me financially. Therefore, when I moved out to Cali, I had no one to ask for help. I was on my own. At first, it was scary and stressful. However, with time, I started to understand the benefits of solely relying on myself. Going through that financial struggle made me a stronger and more resilient person.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I own a video production company here in San Diego called RS VIDS. We specialize in all types of video from real estate to short films. Most of our clientele in San Diego are black business owners and black entrepreneurs.

I have yet to meet another black female in San Diego who works and specializes in video production. I think that is what sets me apart. Most video production businesses or contractors are predominantly white and male. Therefore, when a business hears about me, I automatically stick out. I also bring a different style and flavor to the video production world in San Diego.

I am currently attending SDSU’s film school. Therefore, I place a lot of emphasis on storytelling and pre-production planning. Most videographers in San Diego show up and press record. I, on the other hand, pride myself on being involved in every step of the process from beginning to end. It’s not just about having a cool video with cool transitions. It’s about the story that the video tells. What is its purpose? Who is the target audience? I keep all of these things in mind throughout the entire process.

I think the biggest difference between me and other videographers in the area is that with me you don’t just get a videographer. You get a filmmaker, a screenwriter, and a director. I incorporate all of the core film elements into each and every marketing/corporate video that I work on.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I best like about our city is the landscape. We have almost every landscape that you can think of. Mountains, deserts, beaches, etc.

What I least like about our city is the lack of Caribbean food options. I come from the east coast, where Caribbean food is everywhere. Coming out here and not really having Caribbean food options has been the hardest part.
