Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth-Ann Thorn.
Hi Ruth-Ann, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
In 1995, I founded Exclusive Collections Galleries, a company that quickly became a resource for private collectors, institutions, and corporations. My core belief that art plays an essential role in our lives and should be accessible to everyone. I am proud to offer an extensive collection of fine pieces that present an opportunity to create a lasting legacy for generations to come.
My team and I are dedicated to making art accessible to everyone. Through this commitment, we have been fortunate enough to have clients from all corners of the world who have made my galleries an exciting and welcoming space for unique art experiences. The artists I feature are internationally acclaimed, representing a diverse array of styles and genres.
Throughout the year, we host a variety of exclusive events designed to create an awe-inspiring environment that fosters meaningful interactions between patrons and artists. These events offer an opportunity to engage with artwork, shared passions, and the joy of collecting fine art. I cherish the relationships that have been built through the appreciation of beauty and the common thread of art.
Over the course of 26 years, the company expanded to numerous locations in San Diego, Beverly Hills, Laguna Beach, Ceasars forum shops Las Vegas, NV, and Breckenridge, CO.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having a passion is essential, especially for those who have devoted their lives to art. Through the years, we have experienced both triumphs and challenges, but the strong bond we share as a family with artists and patrons keeps us united.
Being a small business owner is always a challenge, regardless of the industry you’re in. In the art industry, we heavily rely on collector support, and having a good location is equally important to attract foot traffic. I’ve learned that being located in a subpar area can be costly, which is why I always emphasize the significance of an ideal location. Additionally, it’s crucial to surround yourself with individuals who share the same passion for art as you. I am grateful to have an incredible team of people – with amazing talent when it comes to art!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known for being in the art world as a gallery owner for 3 decades. I am also a passionate documentary filmmaker and host of the show “Art of the City.” My program features Native American artists and is broadcasted on both GlewedTV and FNX (First Nations Experience). Additionally, I am the Editor-in-Chief of Off the Easel Magazine and contribute as a writer for Art World News. I am proud to be a member of The Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD).
My filmography is a joy! I have produced six cultural films that showcase the diverse Indigenous art, history, and culture of North America. These reels were filmed at different points and on various tribal lands, providing an authentic representation of Indigenous heritage.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Surround yourself with the people you want to be like! My big secret is surrounding myself with people that are way more talented than I will ever be.
